I haven't read these, though I have read some of Lafcadio Hearn's short works about New Orleans. He spent 10 years living in and writing about New Orleans but what he is famous for is writing about Japan. I have

Chita: A Memory of Last Island is a fictionalized version of a hurricane that wiped out a Louisiana barrier island used as a summer resort long before we named hurricanes. It is on my to-read as well.
