I have a 505 but it should be the same as the 500. You just drag them from the library onto the reader thats it.
You can also try calibre where you just load them into calibre library and select the transfer to reader button.
As PDF support is not that great on the 500 you may like to convert them in calibre to Sony's lrf format before putting them on the reader.
