I have just found out that it is translated and shortened text from the 1930 french publication.
It was published in 1954

The illustrations are not metalcut (or woodcut). I must have confused the illustrations type with the illustrations from "Two years vacation", another treasured book.

The illustrations were made by Zdeněk Michael František Burian
