It is not preventing anybody else from buying the book.

It is merely an additional way of trying to get the publishers notice and tell them that customers do not agree with their methods. Amazon provide a method for people to air their views about products that they sell, people are just making use of that. Amazon being the most public bookseller is clearly a very good platform for people to use for letting publishers know their feelings.
