Only Amazon's proprietary AZW and unprotected TXT, MOBI, PRC files are directly compatible with Kindle. Kindles also have PDF support. Amazon also allows publishers to offer books without DRM.

What do they mean by "only compatible" and "associated ebook store"? It makes it sound like Kindle is locked into Amazon, then lists a bunch of exceptions... It's more accurate to say that Kindle books are ONLY compatible with Kindle devices/apps. The reverse is not true. I would really like to draw a Venn diagram here.
Also, it's impossible for Amazon to know what you're reading if you keep the wireless turned off.
