The Kindle FIRE HD also needs a special charger for normal charging but you can slow charge with a normal USB. Both the usb and HDMI ports themselves are standard.
Nook also offers a proprietary HDMI-out cable adapter for $40, which is probably why they went with a proprietary connector just like Apple. After all if it works for Apple...
