the backup is a large file containing the apps and data that are stored on the ipad. you'll use it in the event you ever need to do a restore to your ipad. it does take a while the first time but after that it should go through much quicker, unless you somehow add a lot of content to your ipad through a means other than your PC (like downloading apps, or in-app purchases).
