"Middlemarch" is considered to be George Eliot's greatest work and, in the opinion of many, is one of the greatest English novels of the 19th century. At the time it was published, in 1872, Eliot was universally acclaimed as the greatest living English novelist - the older writers of the Victorian era, such as Dickens and the Bronte sisters were dead, and the younger generation, such as Thomas Hardy, had not yet achieved fame.
In Middlemarch, Eliot shows her mastery of the "multi-plot" novel, in which a number of different stories are interwoven. She interweaves the stories of various friends, acquaintances, and relations in the fictional town of Middlemarch in early 19th-century England.
