Johann Wolfgang Goethe verfasste sein Bühnenstück Iphigenie auf Tauris nach der Vorlage von Euripides’ Iphigenie bei den Taurern. 1779 schrieb der Dichter eine Prosafassung, die er während seiner Italienreise ab 1786 in ein Versdrama umformte.
Das Stück wählt zwar einen antiken Stoff, gibt jedoch mit seiner Problematik ein seelisch sehr realistisches und zeitnahes Bild eines Problems seines Verfassers wieder. Goethe war Staatsminister des Herzogtums Sachsen-Weimar, genoss das Vertrauen des Herzogs und entfernte sich von seinem Dichterberuf.
