First of all, Qt seems can't find it's fonts ... Ok, I'll add fonts to checkers installation.

Second, about touchscreen

export QWS_MOUSE_PROTO=tslib:/dev/input/event1

does "/dev/input/event1" file exists?

And probably we should try

killall nickel

first...
