The same thing happens to me when I want to connect to wireless other than the one I have at home. Even though I came across some unsecured wi-fi signals, when I wanted to "test connection" the result was always "unsuccessful".

EDIT: I just realized that I can connect to some Wi-Fi's that don't need password, but not to all. What may be the cause?
