Yes, it's best to avoid them. In order to fix this issue, you'd have to replace each space in a file name reference with %20 (the hexadecimal code for a space character.); e.g.
02-1_Pitcher%20and%20bowl.jpeg
(This needs to be done both in the .opf and the .html files.
