Looking at strings, contained in relevant executables and shared libraries; looking at debug level logs; looking at parameters of called functions, while debugging pillowd by gdb; and, finally, looking at strace output (scanning strace output was indeed last but, surprisingly, completely sufficient for discovering algorithm of searching for localized resources).
