Only if the original images are small. If the original images have higher resolution as is often the case (I've found most of mine to be around 1200px in height), then higher DPI means better clarity and sharper images. Even text with uber tiny font can be legible without zooming.
Alas, I don't think there are 4:3 tablets out in the market right now with higher than 1024x768 resolution. Rumors are the iPad 3 will have it, though, and I reckon the rest will follow.
