The 500 is not seen as a new device. It will not mount as a new drive. You have to have the USB device driver installed. It has to be installed on 32-bit Windows. It did work on WinXP. I have no idea if the device driver would work on 32-bit Windows8 if there even is such. The device driver will not work with 64-bit Windows. So if you have a 500 and a 64-bit Windows and no access to to 32-bit Windows, then the only way to load content is via a memory card and you won't be able to put eBooks in collections.
