The battery life of the Kindle is an excellent feature. That said, all my exciting moments have been due to a flat battery.
-As already noted, it will not charge while in USB Drive mode. In fact it (somehow) uses power and will die if you leave it on your computer all night without the power cord.
-If you leave the Whispernet on while on a commercial flight (Hey, I forgot!) the battery will go flat.
-If all else fails, do not panic, and plug the fool thing in. In my case, this step has always cleared up the problem.
