#005 - - Iain M. Banks - Surface Detail
589 pages
It's an Iain M. Banks Culture novel. Need I say more? - Jan 7, 2011
ISBN: 978-0316123402

#006 - - John Barnes - The Merchants of Souls
297 pages
The 3rd sequel in the Thousand Cultures serie. Great conspiracies-within-conspiracies story, great story, good action, and definitely better than Earth Made of Glass (the 2nd sequel), but still a shade less good than the book that started the series, A Million Open Doors. Still, you can't go wrong with John Barnes. - Jan 15, 2011
ISBN: 978-0812589696

#007 - - Art Spiegelman - Maus II: A Survivor's Tale: And Here My Troubles Began
132 pages
One comic book, two stories: one is the straight, horrible story of the holocaust, the other chronicles the complex relationship between the author and his father in later life, itself strained by what Auschwitz did to the man. It's sad, terrible, funny and poignant at the same time. Like the first Maus, it's a masterpiece that'll bring tears to your eyes. - Jan 16, 2011
ISBN: 978-0679729778

#008 - - Adolf Hitler - Mein Kampf (James Murphy Translation)
567 pages
I rate Mein Kampf as an okay book because, disregarding what it stands for today and who wrote it, it isn't as badly written as many would have you think. It also provides a rather accurate depiction of post WWI rancors in the German-Austrian space, and a window into the megalomaniacal mind of Hitler. What's more, comparing this Nazi-approved translation with modern, annotated translation gives fascinating insights into the translators' opinions. The knowledge of what Hitler did afterwards turns this slightly boring autobiography and political manifesto into a must-read for anybody who wants to talk about Nazism intelligently. - Jan 23, 2011
ISBN: 978-0984536153

- John Barnes - Candle
278 pages
[In progress]
ISBN: 978-0812589689
