I don't think it has been historically. I think it is something that arrived with the silicon valley startups. Generally, people show respect for their competition. Humility makes one more likable and vanquishing (or being vanquished by) a worthy opponent is more respectable.

The uber kids that are the face of the computing industry were CEOs before they had a chance to learn respect and manners. So, we got a lot of breath holding and name calling. Their success made this fashionable. Kind of a shame.
