If it's too much, try something "literary" like Tom Robbins. His books, always based on odd premises and often odder content, are usually pretty fun. I recommend Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, Jitterbug Perfume and Skinny Legs And All as starters. An entertaining writer, and not "slit your wrists" stuff at all.
