When Oprah told her audience she loves Amazon's electronic book reader, search traffic for the word "Kindle" went up 479pc. The gadgets has become a firm favourite of celebrities, from Jennifer Aniston to Cameron Diaz and has spawned an industry forecast to be worth more than $1bn (£628m) in the US within the next few years.
While not available in the UK yet because of technical issues such as the necessity to strike deals with mobile phone companies to cover the cost of data use, geeks and bookworms alike are closely watching its developments from this side of the Atlantic. While the Sony Reader, which is on sale in the UK , may be visually similar to the Kindle, it does not have wi-fi capability.
