Try Lyndsey Davis' Marcus Falco series. He's a PI in ancient Rome. Also Umberto Eco who is Italian. Especially good is The Name of the Rose

Also the Brother Cadfael series by Ellis Peters. These are mysteries set in the 1100's in Britain. And The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series
