A "true life" detective story written by the founder of the world-famous Pinkerton's detective agency, Allan Pinkerton, in 1874. I've not read it yet, but it appears to involve a case of fraud in the southern US. Seems to be well written, although showing a propensity never to use a simple word when a more complex one is available: eg:
He picked up the animal by its caudal appendage...
(ie by its tail
Has a number of excellent period illustrations.
Warning: being set in the deep south in less "enlightened" times, this book contains a lot of language which would today be considered racially offensive.
