The prime characteristic of e-ink displays is that they use power only when changing
pixels. A static image doesn't use any battery power at all.
The point of having a 'screensaver' is to give you an immediate visual feedback that the unit is 'sleeping' -- that the controls have been disabled to keep from accidentally registering unwanted page turns, etc. when not being used. This could be done by just blanking the screen or greying it out, but the screensaver images do the same thing more attractively, and with the screensaver hack, allows you to customize your Kindle a little more.
