Henry James [1843–1916]
A Tragedy of Error [1864]

A woman with a lover takes desperate steps when her husband is due to return from a prolonged absence. It’s a melodramatic story.

“A Tragedy of Error” is Henry James’s first known published short story. Written in four parts, it appeared without authorial attribution in the February 1864 issue of “The Continental Monthly.”
