Yes, the "Trades Descriptions Act" says the goods have to be as described, fit for purpose, etc, etc, but there does not appear to be any obvious breach of that here.

The OP said that the reader was sold to his wife by sales staff who said that 100 preloaded books were installed, yet they weren't. It isn't Sony's fault, it is Waterstones. IMHO it isn't that big a deal, the staff at Waterstones should just offer to install the free ebooks then and there.
