Any speaker under 6" with "bass" has boomy thumpy fake bass. Having no bass (cut off about 200 Hz) will work better for speech. Hence traditional phones and 2-way radio were about 300Hz to 3kHz.
Up till about 1960 the smallest size speaker was about 5" even for most portable gear. Many sets had 6" to 8". You also need cabinet volume. It's physics. Hence the typical TV sound bar has far worse bass than 1935 to 1970s table top radios and most TVs till the 1960s.
