Euripides was born in Athens about 480 BC, and lived there until moving to Macedon late in life where he died in 406 BC. He is said to have been a schoolfellow of Socrates, and was the third of the great Athenian tragedians.
Aristophanes ridiculed him, and he won few prizes at drama festivals (perhaps because he questioned religious beliefs) but he was revered by Roman and Renaissance writers.
This ebook contains two of his plays about the Trojan War.
Iphigeneia in Aulis tells how she is sacrificed in Aulis by Agamemnon, her father, so that the gods will grant the Greeks a fair wind for Troy, and how she is taken up by the Gods.
Iphigeneia in Tauris tells how she is made a captive priestess of Artemis in Tauris, and escapes with Orestes, her brother, to Athens having stolen a sacred statue of Artemis.
The source text was a modern English prose translation of the plays, with stage directions, by George Theodoridis of Melbourne University. He retains the copyright, and has given me permission to use his text. He has used original Greek names rather than their more familiar Latinised versions.
