There was a developer preview of Fire OS 5 a few months before it was released for Fire tablets. Perhaps we'll have a similar lead time for Fire OS 6. But assuming Fire OS 6 will be based on Android 6, we have already waited longer for a preview than was the case for Android 5.
But at this point it might make more sense for them to skip 6 and pick up Nougat (7) for a Fire OS 7 next year some time. Nougat initial release was last month, a little shorter than previous cycles, and if Google sticks with 9 month release cycle Amazon may not want to match that.
