Both Howard and Dick Hamilton were having such a good time in the woods near Fort Leavenworth, in Kansas, that they did not care how much longer they would have to wait for Mark Stebbins, who was to be their guide and leader, when they joined the emigrants who, in the spring of 1843, started from Missouri, to the far-away valley of the Willamette in Oregon.
