(Find a more recent test version
there.)
I am currently preparing the KSM 08 and would appreciate if some users could try the current test version. I have this version running on a Touch (FW 3.16.10 and later 3.17.0) and on a Glo (FW 3.15.0). I would be interested in the experiences of users with habits different of mine and in how this version does on other models, especially also on Glo HD, since this model suffered a rotation problem at some points in KSM 07.
Please test this version only if you are an experienced KSM user.
How to install:
If KSM is not installed on your Reader
- If currently there is no version of KSM installed on your device, you need the folder kbmenupngs with its content, and make nickel process the pngs of this folder; cf. "First time installation" in post #1.
- extract KoboRoot.tgz from KBStartMenu_08prep02.zip and copy it to .kobo of your device
- eject safely, disconnect and wait until the installation is finished
- select "tools" > "activate" > "set runmenu settings.msh" > "always"
If KSM is already installed on your Reader
- extract KoboRoot.tgz from KBStartMenu_08prep02.zip and copy it to .kobo of your device
- eject safely, disconnect and disable usb
- select "handle update" > "install update"
- wait that the device restarts
- select "tools" > "activate" > "set runmenu settings.msh" > "always"
In addition to your usual usage of the reader, I would like to propose some tests. Most of them are related to the rotation issue some people experienced under KSM 007.
Test: check database integrity
(from KSM home) select "tools" > "nickel diverse.msh" > "db check integrity.sh"
Test: KSM update 1
Spoiler:
- connect via "usb" > "usb enable.sh" to the pc
- copy KSM08prep02_update001.zip to .adds/kbmenu_user
- eject safely, disconnect and disable usb
- (from KSM home) select "handle KSM updates" > "install updates"
- wait until you see the information screen and follow the instruction there
This will copy
updatetest/nothing_new.txt to
.adds/kbmenu_user and
updatetestdoc.txt to
/adds/kbmenu. You can check whether it worked by
selecting (from KSM home) "scripts" > "browse" > "browse kbmenu user.msh" (there you should see "updatetest"; and if you select "updatetest", you should see "nothing new.txt")
and by
selecting (from KSM home) "scripts" > "browse" > "browse kbmenu.msh" (there you should see "updatetestdoc.txt" )
Test: KSM update 2
Test : KSM's power off screen for nickel
As I get reports of bugs, I will try to fix them and upload the new archive. If you share your test results, please mention which archive you did use (KSM08prep02.zip, KSM08prep02a.zip KSM08prep02b.zip, ...). In order to replace a test version by a newer one, copy KoboRoot.tgz to .kobo, then select handle update > install update. After the device has booted, select "tools" > "activate" > "set runmenu settings.msh" > "always"
When my Touch was on FW 3.16.10, I had problems with sickel rebooting the device each time I disconnected if from the pc (of course only when I had connected from within nickel). Now under 3.17.0, I do not have this issue. If you experience any automatic reboots, you might consider disabling sickel. I have included Frostschutz' disablesickel.sh. You can run it by selecting "tools" > "nickel diverse.msh" > "disablesickel.sh".
The main reason for preparing KSM 08 was that all previous KSM versions fostered nickel database errors when loading books with calibre and the kobo plugin while running nickel. So when you are a calibre user you might test this aspect too.
If you are used to associating scripts with pngs with the help of vlasovsoft's .kobo\fmon, this will not work after installing the current test version of KSM. This is on purpose to protect the nickel database. Therefore, please do not reinstall the complete vlasovsoft (pbchess) package. If you want to update it, only copy the vlasovsoft folder to .kobo (or even better to .adds).
Additional information: KSM 08 is split into two parts. One part is located on the system partition (/adds/kbmenu), the other on the user partition ([/mnt/onboard/].adds/kbmenu_user]).
Maybe it is better if you leave .adds/kbmenu (this is your current KSM version, possibly 07) untouched for the moment. We might perhaps use it when replacing the 08 test version by the release version.
