Exactly the same is true of England. They have some superb players, but they simply don't seem to be able to perform as a team. Players who play well on the international stage at the club level, like Wayne Rooney, simply can't seem to get it together when they play for the national team. I don't understand why.

Perhaps one of the problems is that the English Premier League is so completely dominated by overseas players (it's not unknown for a club to have not one English player in their first-team squad) that English players just don't get the exposure necessary at the very top level of the game.
