When she finishes Harry Potter, I'd recommend Diane Duane's Young Wizards series (The New Millennium edition). It does have a good female protagonist. But perhaps too much peril for bedtime reading.

Perhaps the Telzy Amberdon stories by James H Schmitz would be fun.

Ooohhh... The Ethshar series by Lawrence Watt-Evans.
