it depends on your setup.
I can just use some of my kindles like they are part of my file system.

Used Nautilus to do that.
Also Winscp setup correctly in Linux provides a very handy realtime bridge.
TBH. I don't use the USB mode much. Why would you? you can inject documents, refresh the index, all on the fly.
and Winscp makes viewing anything on the device on the PC a breeze also.
Mine now invokes Notepad ++ in Wine in Linux Mint which is just awesome.
and when I save. Winscp pushes it back to the device for me transparently.
Err. yeah. excellent.
