Some ebooks already have content other than text. Some of the star trek ebooks I've read have the cover art (rendered badly, natch) and the Neal Stephenson ebook versions of The Baroque Cycle: Quicksilver, The Confusion and The System of the World all had family trees and maps etc because they were in the hardbacks and paperback versions, these were large pictures that you had to drag around to see but very easy to read and better rendered than the star trek covers.

Extra content such as illustrations are probably uneccessary but the maps and diagrams and family trees were definately needed for The Baroque cycle.
