Usually write one chapter. It's a nice stopping point, and works pretty well. Of course, some chapters are smaller than others so don't use a word count.

Also try to write everyday or as consistently as possible. Like anything else, it's a habit. Keeping an established pattern is just easier for me. Like exercise. If I don't exercise regularly, it's overcoming inertia all over again! Somehow doing it on a regular basis establishes momentum.

Never beat yourself up -- let your readers do that for you. As long as you're making an effort and doing the best you can, you're making progress!
