They are very well aware of the volumes they're dealing with, it just takes a LOT of work to put together a robust system that can handle this kind of traffic and the number of expected transactions. Even Amazon and Apple would buckle under the strain, and they've had years and multiple big sales events to hone their skills.

And please, let's have a little perspective. They're books, not vital medications whose absence will result in the deaths of millions. And the books are available in paper form; you'll live if it takes an extra couple of months to buy the digital versions.
