The fact that there's no 'return early' capability is a consequence of there being no DRM, since this is a feature of ADE/RMSDK that only applies to DRMed content. Overdrive has never provided this feature on the library portal itself (though it would be nice if they did).

It's only a 'problem' insofar as you may pick a lending period that turns out to be much longer than it takes to actually read the book, denying the opportunity for another patron to borrow the book. I assume one still has the usual 7/14/21 day checkouts provided by the library. A reasonable mitigation might be to disallow 21 day checkouts for non-DRM ebooks (if they're normally provided by the library).
