mtravellerh hat die Info so gut auf den Punkt gebracht, dass ich sie hier nur zu zitieren brauche:

Georg Moritz Ebers (* 1. März 1837 in Berlin; † 7. August 1898 in Tutzing) war ein deutscher Ägyptologe und Schriftsteller. Mit seinen historischen Romanen und populärwissenschaftlichen Büchern trug er zur großen Popularität der Ägyptologie im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert bei.

Georg Ebers hat seine historischen Romane nicht nur im alten Ägypten angesiedelt; "Die Gred" z.B. ist ein Roman aus dem alten Nürnberg des 15.Jh.
