Well, in the US mobile phones were around for a long time before cell-phones. For marketing reasons they used a new name when the new technology was rolled out. After a while when people can no longer remember the old Mobile phones it might be that the old name can be resurrected. The reason for the change was that the older technology limited the number of phones in use and could easily get overloaded in a city.
