View Full Version : Made a quick reader bookcover
Aprilbeginnings 02-27-2007, 04:42 PM Was discussing this on another thread how a bookcover for the original cover could be made easy enough. Well I just whipped one up so here are the pics. Now I have an original Design by Karen, ha ha minus the fabric which was left overs from my making window treatments :D

Aprilbeginnings 02-27-2007, 04:47 PM Oh guys, I am sorry, should I have made these pics smaller? Don't holler at me .... ;(
NatCh 02-27-2007, 05:18 PM Very nice, Karen. Quite striking and definitely not red. You used the Stitch Witch stuff, then? I've seen it in stores (the search for raw materials for my 'projects' takes me far and wide), but not knowing how durable the stuff is (and not really having a need to mess with it so far) I've not looked at it too closely.
Regarding the size, if you want to add them as attachments (rather than in-line images), it'd be more merciful on the lower-bandwidth MobileReaders.
Aprilbeginnings 02-27-2007, 05:28 PM Thank you.
I used some of the stitch with along the width where I turned in the material so I had a nice smooth bottom and top edge. Then I just placed some here and there and ironed it so it would stay enough in place. The rest as far as the foldover on the back and front cover, I actually just hand stitched it. Did the back first, and I didn't make it as neat with a folded edge as the front, the material edge is raw but who was going to see it, so I stitched to make the pocket so the cover would slide in. Put that on and then I actually stitched the front on with it on the cover, LOL..... now it might be hard to get out of there, ha ha without destroying it... but for now that is not my problem.
I may be able to fix the pictures..... I can resize and them send them back up where they reside so they are not quite as big, but I don't want them tiny either.
I should have just linked them. But I will see if I can correct the above.
Aprilbeginnings 02-27-2007, 05:33 PM Okay I cleared my cache, the pictures are now smaller.
NatCh 02-27-2007, 05:35 PM ... now it might be hard to get out of there, ha ha without destroying it... but for now that is not my problem.Nah, just fold the 'hard' cover all the way back and your 'fashion slip' should just slide right off.
You ought to be able to edit your post and attach the pix directly, if you want to do that, then they'll show up as clickable thumbnails (like in CCDMan's MEdge post (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=59663&postcount=12)) for those who want a detailed look. But you should do whatever you like best, they're really not hurting anything the way they are.
Aprilbeginnings 02-27-2007, 05:39 PM Okay well I made them half the size they were, I think the way they are should be acceptable.
Yep probably can slip it out, might have to do a little bending but I am sure it will come off. Probably easier to remove the back first since it's pocket slip thing isn't as long as the front was.
Either way, until that leather Jacket in red is available, this will work for me. Of course the magnets don't want to pull it down but........... ha ha, always something.
It's very nice Karen, what a great idea!
HarryT 02-28-2007, 03:18 AM That's great, Karen - very striking! This could be a whole new business opportunity .
yvanleterrible 02-28-2007, 08:16 AM Nice Karen! How much time is involved?
That butterfly theme came back, how special is it to you? I love their inaccessibility, and the wait over a long winter to see them again. I made this CD storage coffee table (http://www.boissellerie.com/boiss.data/Components/pages/C13.htm) a while back. I couldn't get myself to sell it and it's still in my livingroom so I can look at it every day.
My wife gets angry at me sometimes because I won't kill larvae in her garden, just to see what kind of butterfly will come out. :)
Aprilbeginnings 02-28-2007, 09:06 AM Thank you Lin....... Thank you Harry. No I don't see this as any business opportunity for me, I can't stand sewing and doing things like this, LOL... It probably took about an hour or less for me to make since I had what I needed here at the house.
Now yvanleTerrible <--- you are not terrible :) Butterfiles really have no meaning to me although now I see why you ask, my icon is one too, but it just was something that caught my eye, bright colors and such, flashy <G>...... as far as the material with butterflies, I had wanted to make my drape stuff back here in greens and well at the time, that just struck my fancy.... But yes, butterflies are pretty but I don't collect them or anything like that. Not really, have lots of pictures but I don't collect them, LMAO....... well maybe I do
Crazy mixed up gal.............. oh look ----> http://members.aol.com/aprilbeginnings/anibutfly.gif
slayda 02-28-2007, 10:21 AM Karen,
it sure will make it easier to find when you lay it down somewhere. I lose mine a couple time a week. Wish I had a beeper on it.

you are probably right. But It lays down in two places. 1) back here when not reading it on the dog crate and 2) in the living room on the table near the couch when I am reading it :) If that be the case and someone misplaces one easy and want to make one of these things, perhaps a bright yellow or flourescent color...... <G> I hear you on the beeper.... would be nice to have something built into it and if you misplaced in the house you go to your computer and send a signal and that puppy beeps away for a bit.......... ha ha..I have had things which I wished beeped when they were misplaced as in hubby losing his keys

Or a better pair of glasses! :happy2:
@Karen.
Le Terrible in French has a secondary meaning ;mischievous. No doubt most of you found that out by my particular sense of humor. I can't help it, I see a door opened, I have to peek in. And if someone inside is at a disadvantage, I have to yell it out loud. No false modesty can survive it. Around me you have to be yourself and assume it, I respect that. :)
NatCh 02-28-2007, 10:35 AM I have had things which I wished beeped when they were misplaced as in hubby losing his keys :rolleyes:Ah, you need something like this (http://www.brookstone.com/store/product.asp?product_code=360792) or this (http://www.brookstone.com/store/product.asp?product_code=385658), then. :nice:
Aprilbeginnings 02-28-2007, 10:36 AM You and I would get along great I think <G>

Hey kool, I like that second one.......... he doesn't lose his keys all the time but when he does misplace them because he has gotten distracted, it's been hell around here trying to find them, and of course if he didn't lock them in the truck, LOL. I will bookmark these, maybe get him a little present. Good idea.
Thanks.
Aprilbeginnings 02-28-2007, 10:41 AM Oh you realize, this one could be used to the reader......... attach it where the lanyard went.......... beep your reader.
There ya go SLAYDA, never lose your reader again.........

NatCh 02-28-2007, 11:17 AM That possibility did cross my mind, in a meandering sort of way. :)
RWood 02-28-2007, 12:03 PM Karen,
it sure will make it easier to find when you lay it down somewhere. I lose mine a couple time a week. Wish I had a beeper on it.Then again if your purse, placemats, etc are all the same pattern.... :D
My wife made a jacket in the same fabric as used to recover the loveseat and "lost" the jacket now and again when she would take it off and place it beside her on the loveseat. (We must have five bottles of Stitch Witch and Fray Check around this place.)
Great job on the Reader slip cover.

Thank you.
That is true, but the only place that pattern is in existence is up in the air on the wall..... But that would be something huh? make one out of couch material or something, that sucker would blend right in and probably get sat on. OUCH.. I do suggest using something that isn't common around the house <G>
yvanleterrible 02-28-2007, 12:18 PM Oh you realize, this one could be used to the reader......... attach it where the lanyard went.......... beep your reader.
I can just hear this, "Hey! Yvan! Your phone's ringing... well your pda... ok! your watchamacallit! It's ringing!" :happy2:
NatCh 02-28-2007, 12:20 PM My wife gave up that fight some time ago, these days I mostly get, "Honey, something's beeping!"
Aprilbeginnings 02-28-2007, 12:20 PM Oh I like that one, your watchamacallit is ringing, LMAO. :devilish:
yvanleterrible 02-28-2007, 12:37 PM karenlaterrible!
Aprilbeginnings 02-28-2007, 12:49 PM LMAO, that be me.................
slayda 02-28-2007, 02:25 PM Karen, Nathan,
This finder (http://www.findonefindall.com/) looks better (i.e. more versatile) & cheaper.
Aprilbeginnings 02-28-2007, 02:27 PM Wow another to keep in the files for consideration. Thanks.
Azayzel 03-03-2007, 07:47 AM Sweet idea, it's great to see someone actually follow through with their ideas! The cover looks like it fits nice and snug too, and the print on it is just beautiful! Read the earlier posts about butterflies, I had considered for a while if you did in fact like butterflies, given your avatar, and when the cover pix were posted I asked my other half and she said "Hmmm..." Now she's going to get a good chuckle when I tell her that it isn't the case. But in all seriousness, it looks great and now I'll have to commission my own cover... the possibilities for this are endless (think what kind of inserts you can put inside it to protect it, or what other trinkets, without getting too crazy, that you can add to it). Perhaps you can hold a contest for the most creative evolution of your idea?

Thank you again. Well actually who doesn't like butterflies, I mean honestly they are a beautful bug if you want to call them that <G> AS far as contests and making things, might be an idea. I will stop where I am, not into doing this stuff that much and I still want to order that red leather one from m-edge if they ever get that one out. Of course at this point in time I would kill for one of those dooney and bourke covers....... just bought one of their purses and very well made, so I can imagine that cover is just great too.
And yes I checked their websight and no I didn't see anything there for sale that was a e-reader cover. :( Maybe in time they will.
yvanleterrible 03-09-2007, 12:16 PM Say Karen!
Could you post patterns of your jacket and a quick how to for us sewing newbies?
This idea of yours could solve maintenance problems in the long run beause the reader is built to last. One could have multiple jackets to suit the mood of the day. Or pop one in the washing machine and dress the reader with an other... we're pampering that thing like they were babies, might as well have a change for it. Glad they're not diapers though. Been there done that. I'm looking forward to be a grandpa although not too soon. :smiley2:
Aprilbeginnings 03-09-2007, 12:31 PM I didn't use a pattern! Did you ever make bookcovers in school for your school books using paper bags? Well that was what was in my mind...... I took a piece of fabric and folded it over so that I would have one seam in a lenthwise direction... I also placed the reader opened on this fabric...... allowed a little allowance for extra at the top and bottom ( I had maybe an 1/8 of an inch, could be more if you want.) on the folded over lenthwise position after getting it sized (my material was just right, I didn't need to cut it this direction) I took that stitch witchery stuff (yes you can sew it too) and ironed on the bottom hem or tacked it just to keep the material in place.....
Then I layed the reader back down on this..... I allowed three inches extra on the readers flap side and maybe an inch or two on the back side (where the snap is since it won't fit farther than the snap) I folded that over and clipped any extra.......
iron.....then I sewed up the back side first and just did a slipstitch on the edge, did the same on the other half (bottom or top,)..... slipped the reader cover inside...... then I went to work on the other half. I actually folded the material over the reader and sewed it with the reader in it because I didn't have much leeway and that is pretty much it...... stitched other end and there it was......
Hope that made sense, LMAO........ I tried.
Aprilbeginnings 03-09-2007, 12:32 PM oh it took me about an hour I think.
yvanleterrible 03-09-2007, 02:30 PM Thanks! :smiley2:
slayda 03-09-2007, 03:15 PM You can get "ready-made" book covers (stretchy material) from scool supply places, e.g. Staples, Office Depot. They come in various sizes and can stretch to fit - maybe not perfectly. I have one from staples that I'll try to find. If I do, I'll provide pictures.
Aprilbeginnings 03-09-2007, 03:18 PM Very interesting. This I WOULD like to see if you find it.
Aprilbeginnings 03-09-2007, 03:20 PM Just did a google...... found this. Wonder if this one size all fits all...... has patterns.
