Funny isn't it? We had previously had a long discussion about a 5" eDGe, concluding that a mini-eDGe would actually be appealing. enTourage must have been giggling each time they read that thread :)

I bet. Can't wait to see what it's all about.

Just to keep this up to date:

and a reposting of this at

IMHO, this "pocket edge" concept i a bit beyond the point and doesn't really offer the advantages of the bigger device, but well, let them try. :)

A member of the enTourage forums just spotted the first pre-order availability of the Pocket eDGe.

J&R's regular price is listed at $399, initially discounted to $349 in black (http://www.jr.com/entourage-systems/pe/END_POCKEDGEBLK/) and red (http://www.jr.com/entourage-systems/pe/END_POCKEDGERED/).

Being Canadian, I'm happy to see J&R ships to Canada for $43.19 USD.

Wow I could be interested in this smaller form factor:

I find it real strange when enTourage own site (http://www.entourageedge.com/) not as much as mentions the pocket model. What's up with that. Are they ashamed of there new model?

That's what happen the bigger model is what everyone on the network was talking about and HSN has that tiny version. So the bigger model was running Android OS 2.1 and now this smaller version runs Android OS 1.6. Again that price is too high for that OS. Where you can get a Maylong for $99 to $129 (reported by some members).

Yees, the Entourage web-site is a mess. The specification page (http://www.entourageedge.com/devices/entourage-edge.html) doesn't even specify the Android version running. Maybe for good reasons if they're still on Android 1.6.

I was quite interested in the new model until I read a review (http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/12/entourage-edge-review/) of the old model where it states that it doesn't support the Android market
Does anyone with the Edge know if there's a way around this?

You really don't need Market as the Coby KYROS is on Android OS 2.1 Update 1. It too didn't come with GE (google experience) either. If you use Applib instead you can get the 3rd party Android apps games, tools etc. I show you on here (http://tipstir.the-talk.net/cool-android-stuff-f22/android-market-place-replacement-is-to-use-application-market-store-for-android-t337.htm)

For some reason they pulled the listing. Later on a pre-order page appeared on a European retailer site, and now you can actually order the Pocket eDGe on HSN.

it doesn't support the Android market

No non-phone Android device *ships* with Android Market access - this is Google's (unflinching) policy, which makes sense to noone outside of Google headquarters.

I understand you can gain at least partial Android Market access via third party apps (which I think require root to install).

Fortunately, many interesting Android apps are available via numerous other "Markets", such as Slideme.org. You can also grab the APK installation file of free apps from the Android Market using an Android phone and transfer them to the eDGe (or any Android device) to install them.

Both models run Android 1.6.

If that's the case then both models use the same Marvel PXA168 1GHz CPU. Unless it's not the same CPU. Would be nice if the OEM would post these specs.

Thank you, borisb. I went looking and found this: http://www.entourageedge.com/forums/content.php?133

So it looks like that's a yes!

I went ahead and bit at the HSN offer with the four payments option. It looks like my little red baby will get here next week. So we'll see! I can always send it back if it seems like a bad buy. I was always interested in the Edge, but the original seemed so big and heavy I decided against it. This littler guy might be just the thing.

borisb can you say something about the battery life of the bigger model.
How is the LCD-screen working, can you turn it to sleep mode or do you need to shut off the system. One of the biggest problem I had with the Iliad was that there was no sleep function and you had to turn it off.

Good question. Also, do you have to have both screens on? If you were able to turn off the LCD screen the ereader would last a lot longer.

Regarding the battery life, read the details here: http://www.entourageedge.com/forums/showthread.php?972-Dingo-Noticeable-Performance-Boost-9-hour-LCD-and-20-hour-Reader-battery-life-!.

You can definitely turn the LCD screen off, either by timeout or by using the "Lock" icon on the Power Widget control. The LCD uses something like 50% of the power (or more?) so turning it off greatly boosts battery life. Also, when you're not using the eDGe, just close it which puts it into power saving Hibernate mode.

Did you read the PCMag review (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2365994,00.asp) on the larger one HSN spiked the price to $429 on the little son version. Funny how the payments was $124 for $399 then later on today it dropped to $104-107. I wonder if it will go on sale prior to Thanksgiving weekend? I'll wait it out and see what the feed back is so far on any of the two products.

Take these pundit reviews of the eDGe with a truckload of salt, enGadget and Gizmodo in particular. If you want to get a sense of how people like the eDGe, visit the enTourage forums and read posts like http://www.entourageedge.com/forums/showthread.php?927-My-First-Two-Week-In-Class-with-the-eDGe-Review by people who actually own and *use* an eDGe.

One of my many pet peeves with these lame pundit reviews is their complaints of ugliness and weight. If you want pretty and waste a lot of money for eye candy, buy the iPad. If you need something for school/work that's actually practical, buy the eDGe. The PCMag review also complains about screen brightness - clearly they didn't go into the settings where you can almost double the standard brightness.

Just a quick note re: battery life... I find it frickin' amazing! Even with wifi on and surfing/email/twitter etc. it lasted for hours. I never did time it, but I was getting at least 5 hours, and I may be off but it felt like I was getting much closer to 7 - 8 hours. I also have a second battery and I have never ever been stuck without battery.

I wrote about it extensively on the edge forum but not here, but I was without a laptop for 6 weeks and the edge was my only laptop for that time. So, when I used it, I USED it - it was always connected to the internet and was even more of an internet device than an e-reader for those weeks. The battery life was a delightful surprise (one of the recent software upgrades just shot battery capacity through the roof).

Because I had no other machine, I had to do everything on the edge (email, web, documents, photos, twitter, wordpress) and I was truly surprised just how much it was able to replace a laptop. Not 100%, but at least 85%. And as I said, with a spare battery, battery life was never an issue.

The full size eDGe yes (although it's downclocked to 800 MHz, presumably for heat control, or battery life, or stability, or all three).

No official specs have been published yet for the Pocket eDGe, but the enTourage site indicates Nov 8 is the official launch date, at which time official specs should be available.

Entourage talks about it (Android version upgrades to the edge) here:

Short story is, it will be on the pocket edge sooner than the full edge.

Personally I would rather want to see it with the future Gingerbread version. But as some member on the Entourage forum states:
Android Gingerbread requires a minimum hardware spec which includes a 1Ghz cpu.
the eDGe does meet that, but it is underclocked. If it remains underclocked, gingerbread will jot be an option.

Thank you, it IS exciting!

I already have a problem though with the set-up. I connect to our open wi-fi here at work (a library) and choose my time zone and the correct time appears at the top of the PE, but then at the bottom it says it wasn't able to do it and to try again or choose another time zone. I've tried doing it over, powering it off and trying again - nothing gets me past this incorrect error message - incorrect because it has found and displayed the correct time. Is there any way to move past this screen and continue with the set-up, does anyone know? :help:

sarah11918
11-04-2010, 04:03 PM
Weird - I don't remember having to select a time zone right off the bat when I set up my regular edge. (Of course, it was months ago) So, I can't picture the screen you're describing.

Have you tried choosing a different, random time zone? (Can always be changed back later.)

And, do be sure to post any tech problems at the entourage forums here (http://www.entourageedge.com/forums/forum.php) as the user base is quite quick to respond to questions. Also, submitting a help request to Entourage usually works quite quickly.

Okay, the first problem was just an oddity of the wi-fi at work; as soon as I got home it hopped onto my wi-fi and finished registering.

I must say, I'm impressed with how responsive everything about the PE is, in contrast to some other android devices I've played with. And I'm loving the ability to communicate between the two screens, and instantly display a book's pictures in color or look up further information and even attach it to the book! Of course all of you who already havr the PE's big brother already enjoy all this, but for me it's amazing to see. SO COOL.
