View Full Version : Does the iLiad allow PDF Highlighting?
BKeeper 12-15-2006, 04:39 AM I'm almost ready to buy my iLiad (even though it isn't ready...)
PDF comments (highlighting, underlining) are crucial for me. Does the viewer support them yet?
Are there any plans to enable highlighting with the stylus?
I attach a sample doc
Thanks
henkvdg 12-15-2006, 05:02 AM Yes, the iLiad does.
In this particular case: your sample, the highlighting is visible, but difficult to see, because the bright yellow color is translated to a very light grey.
Scribbling on PDF documents works great now. So you can draw on the document. It is not exactly highlighting, but you can draw circles and boxes around text passages en write and draw in the margins. And underline sentences.
tribble 12-15-2006, 05:59 AM Hmm, you can see comments, but you cannot open minimized commentboxes. At least i havent found out how.
I do not see the highlights in my PDF. not even a faint grey behind the text.
I cannot see the comments that are added to changes.
I cannot highlight anything on the iLiad, nor can i add PDF comments, that others can see.
The scribbling is nice, and it will be helpful, when the desktop apllication to merge PDF and scribbles is available from iRex.
So basically i would answer: NO, the iLiad does not allow PDF highlighting.
henkvdg 12-15-2006, 06:25 AM Tribble,
I used Scotty's viewer: gives a faint grey highlighting with dots.
iRex viewer gives a kind of grey dotted pattern.
(Observe well and close !)
Do you have an example of a PDF file like that, wich you would like to read etc. on your iLiad?
raevyn1 12-15-2006, 06:34 AM With iRex pdf viewer: Original yellow is too faint. Took a few photos to show the advantage of changing the highlight color to medium grayscale. Upper left is gray highlight. Lower left is green underline. Upper right is gray underline. Lower left portion is freehand underline using scribble.
Note highlights/underline adjusted on PC not iLiad
segatang 12-15-2006, 07:31 AM Hi,
The grey highlight looks good.
The middle-up underline is drawn by iLiad or PC?
The center handwriting-like underline should be drawn by iLiad, right?
tribble 12-15-2006, 07:47 AM OK, that makes me a bit pissed. Mine looks like this.
raevyn1 12-15-2006, 07:47 AM @segatang Oops, guess I didn't make it clear that I adjusted the highlighting on PC prior to transfer to the Iliad. Still working on editing on-the-fly using scribble on the iLiad.
BKeeper 12-15-2006, 07:59 AM you guys are great. :-)
by the way, any measurements of battery life with 2.8 installed?
thanks!
yokos 12-15-2006, 09:22 AM Hmm, you can see comments, but you cannot open minimized commentboxes. At least i havent found out how.
Yes, this is stupid. I wanna use this, too. I use pdf comments in my LaTeX files all the time. We just can see the icon of the comment but nothing more. Is this feature on the wishlist?
tribble 12-15-2006, 09:26 AM Is this feature on the wishlist?
Well, yes :)
- highlighting like textmarker (tribble)
- support official commenting feature on PDFs (tribble)

Ok, I see.
Commenting was a feature of pdf 1.1 or at least 1.2 [pdf-reference.1.6.pdf is at home right now on another CF ;-)], so iRex's pdf viewer should support this.
tribble 12-15-2006, 09:35 AM well, i would like to add comments aswell. And not only scribbles. :)

Poppler needs to understand the iLiad is grey scale and adapt a few things for it, like the highlighter colors...
Now that we have the official iLiad Poppler source we can begin addressing some of these issues.
tribble 12-15-2006, 02:05 PM is poppler supporting the commenting feature? That would be great. Even better, if editing would work aswell. Then i would definately need the keyboard case :D
scotty1024 12-18-2006, 03:51 PM If you can supply a commented PDF I'll take a look (I can set break points in Poppler and trace what it is doing, or not doing...)
I've been looking at PDF annotations and thinking about how the annotations could be directly inserted on the iLiad instead of or in addition to the scribble XML file.
I also got a bad Google ebook from lhl that I've been able to start poking Poppler with. Seems the official Google patch doesn't fix everything wrong...
If anyone has PDF's that crash Poppler I'd suggest we create a "This PDF crashes ipdf" thread and post 'em there so we can start examining/fixing.

henkvdg 12-18-2006, 04:44 PM Here you go:
The higlighting is faintly visible.
You can see there is a remark.
Overstrike is there. The upside-down (blue) V-marks.

Hehe, i know henkvdg. I just posted that file for scotty. He wanted to have one to play around with.
to see highlightings, the highlighting color would need to be changed.
Interesting would be do do highlightings with the pen.
you can see, but not open and read comments.
it would be nice to be able to add comments.
the v-marks represent insertions into the text. Thy should also be visible in a comment area. You can not display them on the iLiad either.
again. adding those would be even nicer :)
Scifier 01-27-2007, 11:56 AM well, i would like to add comments aswell. And not only scribbles. :)
Could you post here a PDF file with scribbles made on Iliad please. Is it possible to edit these scribbles on PC using Adobe Acrobat?
the scribbles are saved in their own file. The pdf is not modified.

If your interested there is a script here (http://syngrithy.org.uk/index.php?pT=7) that can merge scribbles with pdf files. If you examine the php script you will know the format of the scribbles and how they relate to the target pdf. What are you trying to do, btw...? :D

What I'm trying to do is to decide - is it already a time for me to buy Iliad or I should wait for a litte longer :)
I get used to read a lot in a form of PDF documents while highlighting the main, importance parts of the document.
From what I read Iliad neither support highlighting nor allows seeing the standard (yellow, lime) highlights on its 16 gray scales screen.
I am just pondering what I going to do when I get my Iliad. E-ink is cool for eyes and perhaps it might be reasonable to do all reading on e-reader instead of PC, however I still might be needed to do some reading/editing on PC sometimes (therefore I have to have a PC copy on hdd and a copy in Iliad and find some way to keep it synchronized).
The question is - what is the best way to keep PDF document (and my comments/highlights/scribbles) both readable and editable on e-reader as well on PC.
php script ? uhm... Does that mean I have to set up PHP on my machine?

At the moment I annotate pdfs on the Iliad and copy them pack across, run my script and have an annotated pdf. The scribbles are bookmarked so I can get to them easily. Since they become part of the pdf I can then continue where I left off... I've got another tool that allows me to see bookmarks on the Iliad. See the webpage I linked to earlier for details.
Ideally I would keep the scribbles seperate from the pdf, but annotated pdfs are mean't be finals...

Some-one else produced a java version and Irex have mentioned they will have one real soon now... :D
