Two gunslingers, one little girl, a big bag of toys... and murder!

Mick and Casey McKee aren't exactly your average gunslingers. He's young and inexperienced, and has much too sunny a disposition for a gunman. She's younger, meaner, less experienced, but a much better shot. They got married the day they met and still getting to know each other.

When they get a job protecting the daughter of a stagecoach king--and her grand collection of toys--it seems like an opportunity to go someplace new. But after the wrong kidnapping, a murder, another wrong kidnapping, a couple of jewel heists and a few knocks to the head, Mick and Casey are left holding the bag of toys. Mick, however, is not as dumb as he seems, and as for Casey...nobody steals her gun and gets away with it.

HAVE GUN, WILL PLAY is a western whodunnit for fans of both puzzle mysteries and light adventure.

Here's what some readers have said:

"I am not a fan of Westerns. ... I was willing to try this one when the author submitted it. I’m very glad I did. The plot was an intricate mystery ... just when I thought I had something figured out, the story would take a different turn. These turns were woven into the storyline smoothly." - Red Adept (4.5 stars)

"Mick and Casey are one of the most unusual, and charming, couples I've ever read. " - Goodreads review

"Take a western, add a little mystery, a little action, a couple of red herrings, a plot line that moves along nicely, 2 protagonists that are a bit different than your typical western, a kidnapping, a whole lot of fun and you have a recipe for a very good novel." Amazon Review

HAVE GUN, WILL PLAY. On Kindle and at Smashwords. (Also look for it at the Apple iBookstore and other inline ebook retailers.)

HAVE GUN, WILL PLAY is a humorous mystery western just released for Kindle (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003TU20I8/?tag=toogie2-20) and on Smashwords (http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/17488).

I think you just provided the perfect example of the need for a "Genre Soup" tag if/when the Book Fair section goes live. :)

I'm on Smashwords in another tab, buying it. I need some weirdness in my life today (air conditioning would also be helpful, but it's much harder to download).

Thank you! I had a mini-rush on Smashwords today (which is good because Amazon has slowed to nothing).

As for the genre soup - there is a tradition of mystery westerns, although mine, I think, are a little lighter and more mystery oriented.

(But alas, I cannot write anything that isn't a mashup of something.)

I hope you like it!

Interesting note: this month my books are selling faster at Smashwords than Amazon. I credit this group, since this is the only non-Kindle-centric group I have mentioned it to. (Of course, overseas Kindle users probably prefer Smashwords too, since it helps avoid that dreaded surcharge.)

This is just a reminder that Smashwords has a summer/winter sale going on until the end of July. Many books (including mine) are half off. The coupon code is displayed right there on the purchase page at Smashwords.

So stop by and get a copy of Have Gun, Will Play (http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/17488) this week.

Don't forget to check out Have Gun, Will Play. The sequel, A Fistful of Divas should be out before Christmas.

A spiffy new five-star review of Have Gun, Will Play at the "Journal of Always" blog!

This is the kind of review that a writer likes to get - lots of thinking about the characters.

For those waiting for the sequel to Have Gun Will Play, I'm changing the schedule on the series. I was having trouble with A Fistful of Divas and I realized that was because it belongs later in the series. So the next book is tentatively titled "Old Paint: Dead or Alive." It will probably not be out until next summer. (I hope to have some short stories or a novella out there in the meantime.)

Thank you! I hope you like it.

I'm working on the next in the series, but I had to drop it to finish something else. (And I finally realized that the reason "A Fistful of Divas" was giving me trouble was because it isn't right for the next book in the series. So I'll have to write "Old Paint: Dead or Alive" first....)

Kimiwick -

I didn't see your post right off... Thanks for the purchase.

Funny that you mentioned Maverick. When I was first trying to master the art of writing a mystery, I realized that most Maverick plots were actually a simplified version of the kind of complicated twist-and-turn plotting that Agatha Christie did in a more subtle way. I actually studied Maverick to help myself learn.

You're right funny coincidence that. Im just finishing up the 3rd book in a trilogy and your book has now moved up to the top of my list. If its anything like a maverick type story its got to be a winner for me. Will let you know after I have read

Hi Camille

Read this book in 2 nights and I thouroughly enjoyed it. Im not good on review I can only go on whether I enjoy it or not and whether I would purchase further in the series which I would.
Im really looking forward to the development of Mick & Casey because one of the things I really liked about the book is how you dropped in the bits every now and again about their relationship. I also liked the way we see things through Micks eyes as that reminded me of maverick.
I will be on the lookout for the next in the series for definite

Thanks Kiwimick!

I screwed myself up in writing the sequel as soon as I'd like. I liked the title of a story I realized later should be the third or fourth book, and I started in on that, but it really wasn't the right story to be next. The next book takes up pretty much where this one lets off - with the bank robbery they hear about at the end of Have Gun, Will Play.

In this case, they arrive late to find that there are too many high-powered gunslingers already on the case, so they take an easy little job tracking down a wandering old horse, which of course, leads them straight into a murder case.

It's called OLD PAINT, DEAD OR ALIVE - an unfortunately, it is unlikely to be done before summer unless I get lucky. (I do have quite a bit of an earlier draft done, but there is a lot of intricate clue-plotting to do.)

Thanks again for reading it. In the meantime, there are a couple of Mick and Casey short stories in my short story collection (Waiter, There's a Clue In My Soup) which is currently free on Smashwords. (It will go back to 99 cents in November.)

Thank you, Alma!

This book seems to be gathering a little steam right now. (And that is motivation to get cracking on Old Paint: Dead or Alive!) I've just got to finish the current work in progress first.
