You are probably using clit version 1.2a ... version 1.4 is now available at members.lycos.co.uk/hostintheshell/ (http://http://members.lycos.co.uk/hostintheshell/) and it will work with the freebies.

I would send them to you if I could find them on my computer. It doesn't show you where it downloads to.

I'd be interested in getting these freebies without going through the drama of installing MS passport as well.

If you look at the URLs of of MS's free books, you can notice the following pattern:

http://12.149.108.82/Authenticate.Asp?Id=179&Book=XXX.

Well, for the listed titles, XXX is simple
HISTORY for A Short History of Everything
CANDY for Candy and Me
LAST for Last to Die..

Well, some of the next 3 are easy to guess:
SINISTER for "The Sinister Pig"
LUCK for "The Joy Luck Club"
SHORTY for "Get Shorty"

chunlin66
07-13-2003, 03:16 PM
In the URLs, i don't see any words for the current books. It's a bunch of letters and numbers. Joy luck club:http://12.149.108.82/authenticate.asp?Id=180&book=5ZC3868

Do you remember which business one was posted and do you have it? I'm getting in to this a bit late and am mainly interested in the non-fiction stuff such as the one posted yesterday.

Thanks

What is on MS's list of free ebooks this week?

- The Business Travel Bible
by Jonathan Aspatore
This comprehensive resource for business travelers includes facts, figures, and data designed to provide help and information while on the road. Included are phone numbers--both listed and unlisted--for all airlines, hotels, car rentals, and other frequently used business services. Business travel emergencies such as computer crashes, finding medical help in case of illness, and lost plane tickets are addressed. Also supplied are business words and phrases spelled out phonetically in the 14 most common foreign languages and information on local roadside assistance, Internet service provider numbers, and taxi and transportation information. In addition, maps of the 23 largest United States cities for business are laid out in detail.

- The Last Chance Café by Linda Lael Miller

- Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman

As usual, you can find it here:

Well . . . I could . . . just lazy, I guess. Maybe time-challenged would be a 'kinder' way of saying what I am. =)

With 3 kids into just about every sport/club/activity available in this town, I don't get a lot of computer time. (I won't even mention the significant other that wants computer time . . . lol) I've added it to my 'to read' list. The last time I read that was in high school!

Another version of Microsoft .lit cracker Clit (http://members.lycos.co.uk/hostintheshell/) is out :D . Will Billy never learn to get e-books right?

Version 1.5 of Convert LIT is now available! This version rectifies the incompatibility problem caused by the requirement of reactivating Microsoft Reader. You can download it here. Note that if you don't have the latest version of Microsoft Reader, and you're running Windows 98, you should stick with the older version of Convert LIT.

Well that interesting!! According to Microsoft's free ebook page (http://www.microsoft.com/reader/promotions/free_shop.asp):

This week’s free Microsoft Reader eBook titles are not currently available. Please check back with us in a few days. We regret this inconvenience. Thank you for your continued interest in Microsoft Reader.

Well that interesting!! According to Microsoft's free ebook page (http://www.microsoft.com/reader/promotions/free_shop.asp):

Seems someone wasn't too happy about Dan Jackson's Clit 1.5 update :)Well, it is back, with the following 3 titles:
- Blindfold by Kevin J. Anderson
- An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser
- Death Watch by Elizabeth Forrest

That was the good news. The bad news is that Dan Jackson is forced to shut down his page (http://members.lycos.co.uk/hostintheshell/).
The UK's implementation of the European Union Copyright Directive means that, starting from October 31st, it will no longer be legal to use or distribute Convert LIT in the UK. In accordance with this Directive, we will unfortunately be closing down this web page. If you believe you can provide a home for Convert LIT which is not affected by this or similar directives/laws, please drop us a line. A news story concerning the new directive can be found here.

A Walk in the Woods (http://12.149.108.82/authenticate.asp?Id=113&book=AWW1103)
by Bill Bryson

Bill Bryson decided in 1996 to walk the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail. Winding from Georgia to Maine, this uninterrupted "hiker's highway" sweeps through the heart of some of America's most beautiful and treacherous terrain. Bryson risked snakebite and hantavirus to trudge up unforgiving mountains, plod through swollen rivers, and yearn for cream sodas and hot showers. This amusingly ill-conceived adventure brings Bryson to the height of his comic powers, but his acute eye also observes an astonishing landscape of silent forests, sparkling lakes, and other national treasures that are often ignored or endangered. The Lost Continent, Bill Bryson's hilarious first travel book, chronicled a trip in his mother's Chevy around small-town America. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1951, he lived in England for almost two decades. He now lives in Hanover, New Hampshire, with his wife and four children. His other notable bestsellers are I'm A Stranger Here Myself, In a Sunburned Country and, most recently, A Short History of Nearly Everything. A Walk in the Woods is a laugh-out-loud account of an outrageously rugged hike by a beloved comic author.

The Company (http://12.149.108.82/authenticate.asp?Id=1170&book=TC11033)
by Robert Littell

The Company, the magnum opus of acclaimed espionage novelist Robert Littell is a mesmerizing, dazzlingly plotted epic that tells the life and death struggle of two generations of CIA operatives during a long Cold War. Littell's book spans nearly fifty years of postwar espionage, offering perspectives on excursions as varied as the Rosenberg trial, the Bay of Pigs invasion, the alleged 'assassination' of Pope John Paul I in 1978 and the great winding down of perestroika. “A gold mine for true conspiracy theorists Robert Littell's The Company reads like a breeze and is guaranteed to suck you right back into the Alice-in-Wonderland world of spy vs. spy.” Former Newseek journalist Robert Littell is the bestselling author of thirteen novels, published in twelve languages around the world. The New York Times bestseller, The Company, is his most recent.

Savage Night (http://12.149.108.82/authenticate.asp?Id=1170&book=SV11303)
by Jim Thompson

First class criminal Carl Bigelow has a difficult job ahead of him. How can he kill one-time hoodlum Jake Winroy without making it look like a hit? The man is about to turn evidence in to the authorities, threatening to bring the law down on the powerful crime syndicate that runs the city. Allowing Jake Winroy to live could be very bad for the career of Carl's boss, not to mention several prominent but corrupt Long Island politicians. Luckily for Carl, Winroy's beautiful wife is bored with his drunken behavior and anxious to become a widow. It seems that she could easily be implicated in the plot by her eagerness to take up with Carl, the handsome young hoodlum. Jim Thompson was born in 1906 in Anadarko, Oklahoma. He sold his first story to the True Detective at the age of fourteen and went on to write twenty-nine novels, dozens of short stories and two screenplays.

As always, the main page is here (http://www.microsoft.com/reader/promotions/free_shop.asp).
