View Full Version : inexpensive carrying case for the reader
exvaxman 11-19-2006, 01:49 PM I am more than a little paranoid over carrying the reader anywhere due to the weak cover. Anyway - I was in a local sporting goods store and picked up a $5 plastic padded pistol case that the reader fits in. I'm going to do a little research to find a "fancier" metal case for it, but for $5 I can't argue.
Only issue was walking into work with the security officer looking at me and pointedly asking how I was getting along with my boss :)
diabloNL 11-19-2006, 01:52 PM Pics? :D
exvaxman 11-19-2006, 02:25 PM Will post in a five or six days -away from home & camera right now.
I'm also trying to find a plastic hard case for the reader. That way, when I travel, I can put it in my backpack along with laptop, headphones, etc. and the reader would still be protected.
I'm looking for something small (almost the same size as the reader) and lightweight.

I don't know if they have one that is the correct size, nor are they the cheapest option -- but these things are awesome. I've used them for years to carry expensive things in my airline luggage. I don't have my reader around to look at the measurements -- but if anyone sees one that looks like it will fit, I'd give it a whirl.
NatCh 11-22-2006, 12:19 PM I've got a pretty good set of measurements, and it doesn't look like any of them are in the right neighborhood. :sad2:
yvanleterrible 11-22-2006, 12:39 PM They look pretty nice!

You just gave me a brilliant idea. I have this patent leather case I guess it's for cosmetics (sorry guys, not girlish looking though) that just happens to be just slightly larger and the reader fits into it. Not real super thick but will work for added protection. Until I get that other cover that is neoprene, this will work well.. I did have the charging cords in it. Looks like I will take the reader in this. No room for the small light though. Oh well.
NatCh 12-06-2006, 12:40 PM I've mentioned it several times, I thought it was time to post some pix of my hollow book carrying case, so here they are. I thought the title of this particular book was appropriate. :nice:
Aprilbeginnings 12-06-2006, 01:14 PM Looks cool enough......... what did you use to line it with, that blue stuff? Bet that was run digging out that hole.
Aprilbeginnings 12-06-2006, 01:15 PM Ack can't type, had a scare and thought I lost a CC this morning a few minutes ago..... that should have read Bet that was fun digging out that hole...... My hands are really shakey.
yvanleterrible 12-06-2006, 01:22 PM I saw a little aluminum carrying case for an iPod at my friendly neighbourhood RadioShack(now "The Source"). Maybe they have other sizes?
Aprilbeginnings 12-06-2006, 01:25 PM Hey yvanleterrible, I like what you have there too, what is it? LQQKS interesting. I am probably going to get one of those neoprene ones, but since I usually just keep the reader here at the house, it's not a *have to have right now* kind of thing, although I would like to have something for it.
NatCh 12-06-2006, 01:44 PM Bet that was fun digging out that holeThe lining is just glued-in paper, and not as neat a job of it as I'd like. I went to the local hobby store and found some that matched the endsheet fairly closely and used that.
It actually isn't hard to do, the secret is gluing the page edges before you start cutting. There's a link to (really good) instructions here (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=35099&postcount=41).
I think if I do any more, I'll want to use a Roto-Zip (http://rotozip.com/), or something like it, it would reduce an evening's work into just a few minutes.
Aprilbeginnings 12-06-2006, 02:21 PM Thanks for the link, will bookmark it if I get adventurous

If I walked into work with that case my partner's first question would be, "When did you start carring?" Even the head of marketing is fully qualified although I am yet to figure out where she carries it.
Nightwing 12-07-2006, 09:31 AM Wallmart sell a soft case designed for MP3 accessories but does protect the reader for around 9. Has a small loop handle on the top.
Works well in my carry on luggage and just waking. Have some metal and plastic plates to insert when I can get a chance. But its handy just as it is.

I also picked this guy up; makes a nice slim protective cover.
Also check out the "Game Boy Advance SP" case that Wal-mart sells; it seems a bit sturdier, and it is about an inch and a half thick at the spine so you can carry around headphones as well, still in about the space of a trade paperback (a thick one).
yvanleterrible 12-09-2006, 04:39 PM For sturdiness in this case you can buy 1/8" and thinner birch plywood sold in craft supply houses. Cut it to size round the corners and line it with self adhesive felt. All of which can be done with an Xacto knife.
WilliamG 12-11-2006, 02:32 PM You guys must be lucky. I was passing Wal Mart today and decided to stop there to check the case out. I popped my Reader into it, and couldn't get the case to zip shut without (almost) shredding the Reader cover with the zip. I gave up on the idea. :(

Did you have one of the extra cover or the one that comes with the reader?
WilliamG 12-11-2006, 02:55 PM The one that came with the Reader.
Nightwing 12-11-2006, 02:58 PM Ok...
Sorry it did not work for you. Wonder if they changed it?
One thing I found out was stuff the reader into it.the front of the reader is about flush with the zipper on my unit.
I am hopping the rumor of a hard case comes true.
Aprilbeginnings 12-12-2006, 07:14 AM I went to my Walmart yesterday looking for these cases. They didn't have anything like what is being shown. I think I will end up ordering the neoprene case, but then I just read about a hard case? Anymore info nightwing?

Have not been over to frys to ask the same person. If was true may be after January.
Aprilbeginnings 12-12-2006, 10:38 AM I guess you heard about this at Frys electronics then. Good and thanks....Sort of wishy washy on what do to here, wait, buy, LOL......
Nightwing 12-12-2006, 11:33 AM May be other there today or tomorrow will try to buttonhole the person that told me that.
Aprilbeginnings 12-12-2006, 01:11 PM You know I don't know why I am worried about it..... Took the dog to the vets to get her teeth cleaned, brought the reader with me. I didn't read it (get to distracted) so all in all, I am probably one that doesn't need this at this time since most of my reading would be home on the couch where I am comfy. I didn't read on vacation either.. I think I am more curious when lightwedge for this thing will be made and I wrote them as well and am still waiting for a response.....
NatCh 12-12-2006, 01:19 PM The last response to that question I got from them was an auto-reply saying that they'd answer in 2 business days. That was ... November 27th. :sad3:
So they're not just ignoring you.
Aprilbeginnings 12-12-2006, 01:28 PM Yea I got an auto-reply as well but it's been longer than 2 business days.
slayda 12-16-2006, 11:20 AM Hey Nightwing, thanks for the tip. Got one today. The tag calls it a "Case Logic MP3 Accessory case" for those looking for it.
Nightwing 12-16-2006, 11:22 AM Kind of stuff it in so to speak. Fits snug but works for me....
Good luck with it! ^_^

I couldn't find this at Walmart but I did find it at Target a few days ago and I purchased one as well. It wasn't $10 bucks though, I had to pay $20. It works for me. Now if lightwedge would just come out with that lightwedge for the reader.

Bob Russell 12-16-2006, 02:28 PM This is a great thread, so I wanted to summarize case options so far mentioned:
SPECIFIC PRODUCTS
* Walmart MP3 Accessory case for about $9 (Nightwing) Pics shown also.
* "Game Boy Advance SP" case at Wal-mart. (scottcstoness)
Slightly sturdier and thicker spine width.
Slayda provides pics of this one later down.
Aprilbeginnings bought one at Target for $20
Note: WilliamG tried out one of these and it was slightly too small, so check the exact dimensions or bring your Reader along. Sounds like it may only fit without the cover.
IDEAS
* $5 plastic padded pistol case (exvaxman)
* www.otterbox.com (bostonte) but right size not found yet
* Patent leather case for cosmetics (Aprilbeginnings)
* Hollowed out book (Natch)
* Aluminum carrying case for an iPod (Yvanleterrible) but right size not found yet
* Neoprene cases (Aprilbeginnings) No specific one mentioned, but I'm sure it's listed somewhere else in the forums
* For adding sturdiness, 1/8" and thinner birch plywood sold in craft supply houses can be cut with Xacto knives (Yvanleterrible)
I'm hoping that over time we happen upon some more "generic" cases like the Walmart ones. Might be a great solution for protection.
exvaxman 12-18-2006, 08:50 PM Took my father to a Christian bookstore this afternoon and they had several bible cases for under $15 that fit well. Might freak out a few folks by changing from the gun case goign into work to the bible case......

I was wonder if a bible case would fit. Good job! ^_^

Just an FYI, I found a great case at Office Depot. They carry a Day Runner planner with a nice ballistic nylon zippered case with what seems to have cardboard re-enforced covers. Just be sure to buy the one where the binder can be taken out and NO zippers on the inside. It'll scratch your reader. The one I found was 22$ and fits nice and snug, with just a little bit of room around the edges so the reader won't scrape.
There are soft pockets on the inside lining that you can use to insert felt lined metal, wood, or plexi glass (in my case).
Hope that helps someone.
NatCh 12-24-2006, 04:09 PM Nice find, skeid, and welcome to MobileRead. :nice:
I found a Hello Kitty plastic case that fits the reader. The height is just right. I'm posting some pixs.
I got it at a Sanrio store for $7.99. It came with some Hello Kitty stationery.
Aprilbeginnings 02-10-2007, 04:57 PM I still think I am going to hold out for the leather Jacket in the red version from
http://www.buymedge.com/
I also just emailed them once again to ask them if this jacket is going ot have that snap on thing like the original or if if will be void of that thing. Also for travel I have that case that is mentioned way up at the top from Target for $20, which it fits in and zippers up. I would love that Dooney and Bourke one, but I doubt it will be sold seperatly and second, I am sure the asking price would be way more than what I would want to spend even with it being very nice.
phigdon 04-03-2007, 08:41 AM Here’s the case I made. I have my Reader, book light, Sony noise canceling headphones, the charger cord, and extra batteries. I found a poker chip case at Wal-mart for $10, some dense black craft foam and a can of spray glue. I made the doors and partitions out of some left over lauan and the raised part in the battery compartment out of 1/2 in. foam rubber. Everything fits but its a bit snug. I think that when I remake it I'll look for a slightly larger case.
If I can figure out how to put in pics i will post again.

Wow, this is like the ultimate survival package. :D
Hg-203 04-11-2007, 10:58 PM This is the closest hard case I could find to fit the PRS-500, it's too thick so the ereader will bounce around, but if you put some foam in there that should take care of it. Also if it bounces around it wont hit the screen and damage it.
Edit:
it would help if I put in the link

DuskyRose 04-16-2007, 07:11 PM I want to be able to throw my Sony eReader into my purse, but keep the keys and junk out of it. It's in a red leather case now, but that leaves three ends open. So I'm looking for a good case as well.
For right now, I've got a plastic case that fits it pretty well. It's a game DVD case, the kind that is thick where you can put three game DVD's on one side. The part that holds the DVD's is cut out, with an exacto knife, (taking care not to cut through the clear plastic that the cover art hides behind) and the other plastic bits inside were trimmed out as well. Then I cut a piece of cardboard to slip behind the plastic cover holder on the outside to cover the round hole, and put the game art back behind the plastic art cover. From the outside it looks just like it did when I bought it with the game inside.
Inside, the Sony eReader fits nicely. Just a tiny bit of extra room on the sides, but it doesn't move much in any direction. Once closed, it's snapped shut just as if protecting DVD's.
It's not fancy, but so far does the job and is cheap. I don't keep my games in those cases anyway, so usually end up throwing them out.
RSaunders 04-17-2007, 12:34 PM I saw the best reader case ever on a flight last week. I actually saw another person with a Sony Reader on the same plane. If it's one of youall, read on as I didn't get your name. This guy had a perfect case for carrying the reader in one's briefcase. It was clear acrylic plastic, hinged at the top. It fit the reader, in it's leather cover, very well. After the seatbelt sign went off I went over, with my reader, to ask about it. He said it was a Best Buy anti-theft cover for Nintendo Wii games. He trimmed off the locking tabs (it normally locks to prevent game theft).
I've been to my local Best Buy and seen it myself. It is very strong, rigid (I stepped on one), and just 3/8" taller than the reader. I've tried to buy them from the store without success, I even offered a bribe. (They are obviously concerned that I'd take it home, make my own unlocker, and come back to steal games.) The manufacturer didn't put their name on the darn thing, so I don't know who made it.
So, If you read this, send me a message on how to extract one from the Best Buy. I'd be willing to buy them from the manufacturer, but I don't need a Best Buy's worth of them, one will do.
