View Full Version : Fancy Cover Review, Anyone? JazZi 11-01-2006, 10:44 PM Considering ordering one of the $39 leather covers, but wanted to see if anyone has received one, and what their impression was before I made the leap. Nightwing 11-02-2006, 01:18 AM Here is a link to a brown one I picked up last week... http://nightwing.smugmug.com/gallery/2062130/1/106085293 Bob Russell 11-02-2006, 07:08 AM Nightwing... Did the brown cover have a stiffer front? The black one that comes with the Sony Reader is nice, but I'm afraid someone will squeeze to hard and break the screen, and I don't feel comfortable putting it in a bag, portfolio or backpack for the same reason. That would be a nice addition.... a case with a titanium insert. Light, thin and strong. Of course, there's still the fact that it will "click" the joystick control if you squeeze the cover when you pick it up, but that's probably not a big deal unless the Reader is on and at a menu. I also hit the number buttons occasionally, so I always turn it off. Laurens 11-02-2006, 08:11 AM Such a pity the covers have such unappealing colours. The black stock cover looks great. If only they made a tougher leather version of it. yvanleterrible 11-02-2006, 08:19 AM Patience guys! :) Bob Russell 11-02-2006, 08:33 AM Yep, I would gladly buy a stronger nice quality dark brown or black leather version of the stock cover. If nice, it would probably make me want to read for purely aesthetic reasons. Similar to how some people feel about beautifully bound books, I suppose. My only concern would be (and for me it's very important) that it still slides into the dock without having to be removed. I like the dock, and I don't like frequently clipping/unclipping the fastener on the back of the case. Like Yvan hints at, I'm sure there will be some nice third party covers if the Reader continues to be popular. And people who will spend $350 on a Reader device, probably are a great market for sophisticated looking upscale leather covers also. Anyone listening?.... <hint> <hint> It's a great market opportunity!!!! vanker 11-02-2006, 08:50 AM It would be really cool if Vaja Cases would make a cover for it. They do a lot of high end leather cases for various gadgets. I wrote an e-mail asking if they had plans to make one for the reader, but they had no clue what I was talking about. I took that as a no. www.vajacases.com sarahw2275 11-02-2006, 09:02 AM I see that J & R have the covers available now. Strange that secondary retailers have them but the Sony Website doesn't have them available for shipping yet!! Kosst Amojan 11-02-2006, 09:38 AM I just sent a message to Vaja, hopefully they'll get the message if enough of us do it. jmdor 11-02-2006, 09:45 AM I don't think the leather cover is any stiffer. It is a nice feel (black would have been better than brown, though). The magnets are weak but sufficient. I had already started nicking the black cover, so got the leather one. I think a stiff cover is a great idea. Nightwing 11-02-2006, 09:56 AM Nightwing... Did the brown cover have a stiffer front? As flexible as the original... Was think of slitting the bottom or inside and sliding something to stiffen it up. The case for the Cowon A2 PMP has a stiff cover that covers the screen. Also the Dell PDA has a tought sides. Would be nice for a insert that fits the controls and give protection... Will try to sketch something when I have a chance... Could glue it in. Also a piece of thin steel wound work I guess. Nightwing 11-02-2006, 09:57 AM I don't think the leather cover is any stiffer. It is a nice feel (black would have been better than brown, though). Kosst Amojan 11-02-2006, 01:02 PM Vaja just got back to me (at least they were quick) _______________________ Hi (Kosst Amojan), Unfortunately, we do not have plans to develop a case for that particular device. We appreciate, all the same, your keen interest in our products. Thanks! I have the brown leather cover and I have no problem fitting it into the stand with the cover on (with the clear insert removed). I do agree with you that a higher end cover would be nicer. This cover has a suede like finish and is fairly rough on the inside. May look the worse for the wear after a while. There is no screen protection beyond the "native" stiffness of the cover itself. Other considerations: - the cover is fairly heavy and almost doubles the weight of the "naked" reader - the mount on mine is about 2 degrees off so the reader is slightly out of alignment. A nit to be sure but irritating to an "A" type JazZi 11-02-2006, 04:47 PM Nightwing... Did the brown cover have a stiffer front? My feelings, exactly! I'd love to take the Reader with me on [rare] occasions I find a little down time. I don't trust it loose in the car, and uncomfortable putting it in the briefcase where it might bang against something and crack the screen. Everybody in the world offers a case for my Treo. Surely someone is going to design a great case for the Sony Reader. Nightwing 11-02-2006, 05:00 PM Would be nice to have like a flip over the top cover variant on the stock/extra covers... Have an idea of a insert. Need to see if I can get the parts locally to make it. Catch is it must be very lite. imaredr 11-05-2006, 03:59 PM Other considerations: - the mount on mine is about 2 degrees off so the reader is slightly out of alignment. A nit to be sure but irritating to an "A" type I must be a type "A" cause it really got on my nerves. I felt that at 40 bucks it should have been aligned correctly. I really like the cover, but after five days, I sent it back. Before I read your post, I thought that I had just got a flawed cover, and asked them to send me another that wasn't off by those few degrees. I'll see. I don't knkow if they will send another or simply refund my money. Nightwing 11-05-2006, 04:06 PM Took mine back last night.... Need to check but I think the replacement one is off also.... Bad batch? bostonte 11-06-2006, 10:33 AM Strange. I would have expected a different answer from the Vaja people -- I suppse the problem being where are they going to get the bracket that the reader snaps in to. I've dealt with them on many many occasions, love their cases, and have had custom cases made for devices that they don't "stock" before. Nightwing 11-07-2006, 01:58 AM Confirmed that the replacement cover { brown } has the same fatal flaw as the first one.. Will be take that one back also... One other item.... It very hard to snap it on.. The case it came with is easy to snap on and off. But feels like your going to drive it through the unit.... imaredr 11-07-2006, 07:15 AM Yes, I found it very hard to snap on also. And it kept coming off. I received an email from Sony last night and they simply refunded my money back to my Credit Card. So I guess either I will buy a cover in person from a store or find some other substitute. I really want something more colorful than the cover that came with the reader. BTW that original cover is already starting to show wear and tear on the leatherette trim. Nightwing 11-07-2006, 08:58 AM I should have slid open the 2nd one at the store.. If you do open it at the store.. Cut the fold at the bottom of the pack. Super easy to get out. But for now may hold for a while on #3. I think they may have a MFG goof and not a isolated problem... I hope they did not put the bat division on handling the extra cases designed and production. I would be happy for a spare stock case or two... Nightwing 11-07-2006, 07:44 PM Well. Went back to Borders. They went through their stock of brown ones while I was there.. All off by different degrees and a major pain to clip on. Leaning to a poll like this... Brown Cover Fits Brown Cover Does not fit Red Cover Fits Red Cover Does not fit Green Cover Fits Green Cover Does not fit Getting feeling none fit. PS: How is the Poll setup here? Or is it moderator done. PSS: Thinking of a file... But the clip feel like its wrong size or something... NatCh 11-07-2006, 08:50 PM You have to start a new thread to do a poll -- it's one of the options way down at the bottom of the page, right above the last "Submit New Thread" button. You don't add the questions until after you've hit the "Submit New Thread" button, it takes you to a second screen for entering the actual poll text & answers. :beam: Nightwing 11-07-2006, 08:53 PM You have to start a new thread to do a poll -- it's one of the options way down at the bottom of the page, right above the last "Submit New Thread" button. Will check at Frys and maybe Compusa as soon as I can... |
