Hi everybody,
especially who can read Italian.

To day IBS (http://www.ibs.it/ebook/hme/hmepge.asp), the major internet distributor in Italy of books, dvd, cd, mp3 has started to sell ebooks. Italian ebooks that is.

Not many, although they promise to have 2000 in June.

This is the third step that started with Mondadori (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78195), yesterday with the new company Edigita (http://www.corriere.it/cultura/10_maggio_12/nuova-sfida-ebook-rcs-feltrinelli-cristina-taglietti_506ccdea-5d88-11df-8e28-00144f02aabe.shtml)and to day with the announcement by IBS (http://www.ibs.it/ebook/hme/hmepge.asp).

I checked and I saw for 5 euro "I Visigoti e la rinascita culturale del secolo VII. In Italian yuppie! epub with ADE. I will buy it.

For me and for us Italian this is a major breakthrough. God bless English books and old time classics, but being able to read something new on our beloved ereader, that's something.
Also, let me say this, our books, both in narrative and not, are quite interesting.

Although not of Italian decent I spent much of my youth in an Italian (mostly) community in New York.

Many of my friends had parents directly from Italy and you remind me of them (the parents). Except that you look like Clark Gable. I suspect that you must be from the northern parts of Italia. Possibly the Po Valley area.

thanks for the posting. Now, my Italian is way way basic - but I would be interested in expanding it with the help of books. eBooks might be the way to go (although I am still working on 'il nome della rosa' but should get that finished in the next 10 years or so :-)

Actually I did - for about 14 years. Made it up to the qualifications for European Championship when my knees decided they had enough and needed major surgery. I was devastated at the time. I fenced in the time when ladies were only allowed foils.

There's the possibility of:

1. Kindle. I'm not sure but it should have a proper IT-EN compatible (i.e. integrated with the system) sold. But I'm not quite sure about the quality/range of these ones. Reviews and stars doesn't usually point to complete satisfaction of those dictionaries.

2. The PocketBook, which can use files from this (http://xdxf.revdanica.com/down/index.php) repository of free dictionaries. You have to convert the .dic file with a program supplied by Pocketbook, it's very very simple. The dictionaries aren't comparable to the "big" dictionaries, but they're in the mid-range, from what I could understand, which is the kind of dictionary somebody not making a translation of the whole text would usually use- if it's just to check the meaning of a word it's pretty fast (and I fear you wouldn't fall in better hands with Kindle's dictionaries- maybe Abbyy's, but I'd wait to know that from somebody else's experience before betting on that horse). You can also set a key (or the long pressing of a key) to open the dictionary without using the menu.

Thanks, Bookster. The Pocketbook still sounds like the best. Ideal might be a larger screen and a stylus to just point to the words to be looked up, with a little box magically appearing with either a definition or translation, but that doesn't seem to exist (yet).

I found for you this tread (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=148695&postcount=1)that shows and discusses the fine art of building your own dictionary. Obviously not from scratch. :rofl:

Even if you do not find in the tread the exact answer to your question it is a good starting point to move on on your quest. I think that you are right in searching for an ereader with some well defined capabilities that you value. And it is worth a few days before reaching a decision, and some dough to get what you want. Once you have it, it will be your faithfull friend for a long time. Unless, like my friend Bookster that since yesterday owns 8 readers (eight!), you are a collector. She seems to know a lot about dictionaries so you might have found the jackpot.
You could also post a precise question in this tread (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=123).

Dante is atrociously difficult even for an Italian that has studied it in school, 4 hours a week for the last 3 years of high school. A hard, stony hard hermetic poetry. Rime petrose he called them. Ariosto is simply unaccessible.

I would dare to suggest you to read Calvino. A great European novel is La Coscienza di Zeno by Italo Svevo. And if you want to try some hard Italian, try Carlo Emilio Gadda. A very easy one is Guareschi. My wife is reading Lessico Familiare by Natalia Ginzburg. She is ecstatic with it. I also love Primo Levi.

How nice. If you want to practice and acquire some familiarity, I would suggest Guareschi. He is easy, simple, with a delicate humoristic and surreal vein.
Also the short stories of Calvino: Marcovaldo.

Kakarot98, if you click on your link you will see that this site ain't down, but it is very "Russian-orientated". If you change the download format from "xdxf" to "Stardict" you will find dictionaries that will work with your Onyx Boox 60.

you are indeed right, it is just that I find his style so unsufferably, condescendenly patronizing that it gives an off colour to anything he writes - I jsut can't stand the man :D

Sabem o que acho mais incrível? Como português, espanhol e italiano são línguas tão próximas, o que torna possível a leitura sem muito esforço ou uma educação mais formal. Estava lendo a wikipédia italiana sem muito esforço, e embora para alguns vocábulos não houvesse equivalente em português, pelo contexto consegui interpretar corretamente.

"La famosa invasione degli orsi in Sicilia" of Dino Buzzati (even if not yet available on IBS...)

It's a story of a group of funny, genuine bears that invade Sicilia.

Actually, "Le avventure di Pinocchio" of Carlo Collodi is much more famous

I was looking for Shinra Sensei's tip of Buzzati (which I have not read), but they haven't got it either.
