View Full Version : Harry Potter - Order of the Phoenix
Alexander Turcic 06-22-2003, 05:07 AM So did anyone already read book V? How does it compare to I-IV?
Please use **spoiler** in the beginning of your post if appropriate :)
Alex
Supergirl 06-23-2003, 04:00 PM I behave - no spoilers here :)
From Amazon I read that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is over 255,000 words compared with over 191,000 words in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. And the new book is 38 chapters long, one more than Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. So already in numbers, you get more for the buck.
I got my book the day it came out and finished it within hours...I couldn't put it down. It was a great read, despite its darker tones. Warning: there is a significant death in the book and it actually made me cry!! This was a fantastic book!
cbarnett 06-23-2003, 06:11 PM You read the whole 760 odd pages in hours?!? Yeesh!
sUnShInE 06-24-2003, 08:01 AM I think it's actually 870 pages. ;)
I'm in the middle of it, and I will also give no spoilers.
The characters are definitely more developed. Especially Harry, who has hit adolescence full on. It's funny, so far I've noticed that she's used a few words that will send the under-20 crowd to the dictionary (hopefully).
Otherwise, plot structure, themes, etc seem to be what you get/would expect in I-IV. As Supergirl mentions -- it's long. Really long.
Unregistered 06-26-2003, 01:18 AM ** spoiler ** mwahahaha....
umm... i have read the whole book and personally, i am sad, shocked and angry with the ending of the book! The person who dies ( i won't say any names though) is my favorite character and what bothers me about it is the way he died, the fact that he died, and who killed him!!!!! I mean (since this is a spoiler, areally big one, so people who like being suprised, Don't Read This Message!!!), Sirius didn't even deserve to die, he had just finished laughing!!!! And his own cousin, Bellatrix Lestrange, just killing him there!!! Just right when he was smiling!!! Anyone else that has fully read the book and feels the same as me, PLEASE SPEAK UP!!!!!
Thanks for yur time....
Unregistered 06-26-2003, 11:25 AM I read the book every spare moment I could get and finished it Sunday night. It is by far my favorite of the books. Its a lot darker than the previous ones. As said in another post, Harry is full of teen angst. The book has its hilarious parts and its sad parts. I cried several times. The book kept my attention more than any of the other books. I was hooked by the end of the 1st chapter and that usually doesn't happen till several chapters on, usually when the get to Hogwarts. I encourage all of you to read it soon. And for those known to cry easily, grab a box of tissues.
Unregistered 06-26-2003, 04:04 PM ** spoiler **
Yeah... especially if you are reading the end of chapter 35 and you really liked Sirius Black.....*sniffles*
Unregistered 06-26-2003, 06:01 PM ** spoiler **
I've finished the book also...I think it's the best one yet! Harry faces alot more of emotion in this book...he's growing up and he has to face more responsibility. I was very sad when *HE* died! He was my favorite character too :(. I wonder what Harry will do now, without him? I can't wait until the 6th and 7th books...I just hope they don't take as long to come out as this one did.
Once again, a GREAT book.
XOXO~ Brittany :)
Loved it! It truly refects Harry's teen angst; wanting to be the hero and yet, wanting to be normal. I laughed, I cried, I raved.
The meeting with Dumbledore was very reavealing as well. I loved the single tear!! Dear friends will be truly missed.
RockerChick 06-30-2003, 09:55 AM I really enjoyed this book too!! It's a keeper! ;)
emale07 06-30-2003, 07:05 PM Oh yeah. I am totally lovin the "teen angst Harry" - give me more!
Unregistered 06-30-2003, 07:23 PM Does Rowling plan on taking another 3 years to write book 6?
Unregistered 07-01-2003, 12:59 AM This book was terrific! i've been waiting forever and i cant say i'm disapointed. I didn't like the angst Harry though. He was a little mean to those around him and although he is a teenager. he was kind of a jerk. But n e ways.. The death Killed me. I cried so hard. I had to stop reading for a while because i was so mad about *Him*. I liked how in this book they showed that Dumbledore wasn't infallible and revealed things about Harry's parents from an enemy's perspective.. It was Great! I'm already on my way to read it a second time, i'll probably cry harder this time. if anyone knows what the heck that veil thing is that he disapeared behind (like if you have studied greek mythology) please let me know (zappdbrain@hotmail.com)
Unregistered 07-01-2003, 05:47 AM **SPOILER**
I was really really really inexpressably angry and distressed when sirius died. i read over that bit lots of times trying to find ways he might come back to life in the next book.
he was by far the best, most interesting character and i'm so so in love with teenager-sirius!
why?? WHYYY?????????
can anyone think of any way he can come back? ppleasse give me hope...
sUnShInE 07-01-2003, 08:04 AM Continuing to SPOIL...
For those concerned about a certain dead character, I wouldn't worry about this character's disappearance. Having a dead character in a book about a magical world only leaves room for the character's return in fun and unusual ways. Think about all the ghosts Rawlings has used in these books, or those that live in portraits. We have not seen the last of a certain dead dude. :)
MYSTICG0KU 07-03-2003, 12:00 AM ** spoiler **
If u haven't read the book and are going 2 u shouldn't read anything on this page. (duh) I hated it when (You-Know-Who) died. You-Know-Who was the most important person 2 harry that was alive. & the way You-Know-Who died wasn't even a good death. They could've at least died saving Harry Potter or entrusting their powers 2 harry, or anything but what happened.
"Harry saw ****** duck Bellatrix's jet of red light: ** was laughing at her. "Come on, you can do better than that!" he yelled, his voice echoing around the cavernous room. The second jet of light hit him squarely ont the chest. (which was more than likely Avada Kadavra ) Overall the book was great, it was pretty cool how they fought all those dementors like that, especially since they were only using kindergarten spells compared 2 the ones being used against them. One thing i don't like, is how no good guys in the series so far (except 4 that 1 part in the 5th book) has used any dark arts TO FIGHT DEATH EATERS! I know some of u are lifeless enuff 2 say that im wrong in saying no good guy has ever used dark arts because crouch used the imperius curse on crouch jr. I mean are they supposed 2 kill death eaters if they aren't allowed 2? Dumbledore had the oppurtunity 2 erradicate several of the death eaters but he didn't cuz he wuzn't allowed, it makes me wonder if he even knows the curses. Harry should have 2 at least learn avada kadavra cuz how else is he gonna kill voldemort? I guess he could stun him a thousand times. And that part where Harry attacked Bellatrix wuz pretty cool but i wished he had dispensed with the foreplay and went straight for the kill. Another thing that would've made the book 1,000 times better would be if he would've brought Sirius back 2 life. Dumbledore mentioned he had power Voldemort didn't, so maybe he could've went 2 his body and brought him back somehow. Since he is "Harry Potter" he should be able 2 make up his own spells and curses.
MYSTICG0KU 07-03-2003, 12:04 AM also, am i the only person who thinks that harry was a complete jerk 2 cho in the book. i mean the way he was always angry and walked away as if she was the jerk. but i think if he's gonna get a new girlfriend i know who it'll be....
MYSTICG0KU 07-03-2003, 12:05 AM LUNA LOVEGOOD
Alexander Turcic 07-03-2003, 01:24 AM Luna is just too funny :)
MYSTICG0KU 07-03-2003, 01:44 AM ya, she is a little weirdo, but throughout the book and more towards the end there were signs of... well u know, but i think if harry doesn't like her it will be because of her hats, but he did feel sorry 4 her at the end of the book
sUnShInE 07-03-2003, 10:07 AM I agree that Harry was a jerk with Cho, but she was also a hormonal nitwit with him. It's called being 15.
I really don't think Harry'll get together with LL. He didn't even like Treelawney...why would he like Treelawney's psychic offspring? :)
MYSTICG0KU 07-03-2003, 03:00 PM Cho was a little ridikkulus mentioning Cedric all the time but Hermione wuz right, she wuz trying 2 see how much he liked her & 2 see if he wuz jealous. I think if not Cho, it will be harry+luna!
wumpi 07-03-2003, 03:16 PM Heh, I love Harry Potter :) Do you know any other (fantasy) books like him?
MYSTICG0KU 07-03-2003, 03:37 PM lord of the rings is the most popular similar thing i can think of, but it isn't about a teenage boy
Lord of the Rings was a nice series - but Harry Potter is just great. I've read a couple of other good fantasy books like from Feist, Eddings, Williams, Martin.
Looks like this forum is a very promising new place to discuss and find exactly those books that I like most :)
Alexander Turcic 07-04-2003, 07:36 PM Ok I just finished the book and I must admit I liked it - though book IV is still my favorite.
My most favorite character in V: McGonagall (love it how she treats Umbridge)
My least favorite character in V: Dumbledore (where was he when Harry needed him?)
Btw, at Salon.com (http://blogs.salon.com/0001092/stories/2003/06/24/harryPotterAndTheOrderOfThePhoenixChapterSummaryIn dex.html) in David Harris' blog you find a summery of each chapter. David has some other interesting things to say about Potter here (http://blogs.salon.com/0001092/categories/harryPotter/).
spooty 07-07-2003, 04:26 PM Oh me goodness...
**spoiler**
I loved the book tons!!! but I must say.. I thought that it was kinda odd that Harry saw sirius fall through the veil. I mean you'd think that sirius would die right in front of him- blody and dead- but no he just... fell... and the worst thing is... NO ONE WILL TELL WHERE THE ARCH LEADS TO!!!!!! what if sirius is still alive?!?!?!? but that seems kinda wierd that no one will say what that thing is any way....... but i must say- over all the books- book 4 was the best...MAD EYE MOODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dursly-"are you threatening me, sir?"
MMM-"Yes,i am." said Mad-Eye, who seemed rather pleased that Uncle Vernon had grasped this fact so quickly.
"and do I look like the kind of man who can be intimidated?" barked Uncle Vernon.
"Well..." said Moody, pushing back his bowler hat to reveal his sinisterly revolving magical eye. Uncle vernon lept back in horor and collided painfully woth a luggage trolly."Yes, I'd have to say you do, Dursley."
Haahhaa... Mad Eye always sounds like a bloody pirate to me :p Loved it when he turned Malfoy into a ferret and bounced him around Hogwarts' halls :D
RockerChick 07-07-2003, 10:15 PM Go here (http://www.sugarquill.net/) a terrific Harry Potter forum with some very interesting discussions. It's rather heavily moderated, but very friendly because of it. :D
spooty 07-07-2003, 11:32 PM So.. was Mad-Eye Moody .......ALWAYS Crouch... or was there a period in there that he was actually Mad-Eye?
spooty 07-08-2003, 02:04 PM CONSTANT VIGALLANCE!!!!!!!
-Mad-Eye Moody(sort of)
Constant Vigilance became my personal mantra :)
spooty 07-08-2003, 06:20 PM Yes mine also, I loved it when he turned Draco into a bouncing ferret!!!! that has got to be the greatest book ever mad by JK!
G2G!!! bye all yall!

That's now I understood it, anyhow. Could be wrong...
spooty 07-09-2003, 11:29 AM well if he WAS barty crouch most of the time.... he must have been careful about being just like Moody cause in book 5 Moody is just as cool.
do any of you know who Mark Evans was? I've been cheacking the book and can't find him anywhere... people have been thinking that he might be related to Harry's mom somehow.
spooty 07-09-2003, 11:55 AM hmmmm.... Just curious..... Did it seem to you that Harry was softening up to Luna at the End of book 5... is that foreshodowing some kind of relationship in the future? Even if it does turn out to be just friends, But it did say that Harry felt more comfortable with Luna than he did with Cho <3  :D

I don't know about Harry & Luna. She seemed to have a 'thing' for Ron Weasley, to me...I do think Luna is helping Harry feel more 'comfortable' being himself, simply because they're a lot alike . . . for example, they both see Thestrals...
spooty 07-12-2003, 06:53 PM I also noticed Luna having a thing for ron! it was cute! cept for the fact that ron is for Hermione... and ginny for Neville<3
What about Harry? He doesn't seem to get so excited about women...
spooty 07-12-2003, 07:24 PM what about cho?
he really liked her until she ended up being a butt head
Well some people are seriously questioning if Harry is gay :p
US critic Michael Bronski for instance claims that Harry's life mirrors the experiences of young homosexuals. I am not really following him there, but if you are interested, you can read more about that controversial claim here (http://uk.gay.com/headlines/4681)
Btw, NYT Book Review finally gets around to reviewing Order of the Phoenix. I think they liked the book as much as I did, as you can read here (http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/13/books/review/13LEONART.html?pagewanted=all&position=) .

EGADS! What NEXT will they come up with to claim?! One would think that at least with someone as "unique" as Harry that finding a girl/woman to match him would be equally hard and unique. For crying out loud, just because the lad is ... different, doesn't mean he's gay! Let Rowling tell the story, doggonitall! :D
derekweb 06-29-2004, 11:54 AM Question. Has ANYONE found these books in electronic format for the PalmOS device, or even in HTML that I can convert to ISilo?
I'd like to buy a set of them for my girlfriend, and one for myself (of course, I'm not going to pass up on having a digital copy of some great books). but I can't find them on PalmDigitalMedia. I'm not entirely sure they have a very comprehensive selection, either.
Can anyone help point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!
doctorow 06-30-2004, 01:55 AM I don't think the Harry Potter novels were ever released as e-books (someone could prove me wrong). On the other hand, I think they were also the most pirated books on the Net, and it is almost impossible to not find them somewhere on the Net in html format... Usenet groups, IRC, Emule, ...
Question. Has ANYONE found these books in electronic format for the PalmOS device, or even in HTML that I can convert to ISilo?

Hey,
This is not the place to ask such a question. Don't mean to be rude but books in .html format are easily copied and distributed by pirates.
@doctorow Do not discuss file sharing networks here.

Looks like I'm going to have to quote myself here. I was NOT asking for access to pirated materials. I was asking about the probability, possibility and if such existance was true, a link perhaps to finding the materials.
I am well aware of file sharing networks. Everyone knows that you can get just about everything through one of those services. I don't, and won't, use them.
I'm sorry you took me out of context. Hope this clears up my stance.

Found a publisher that actually distributes some of their books, FOR FREE even, in HTML format. Just thought I'd point this out. Especially since I'm a big fan now of Honor Harrington, by David Weber (thanks to my Girlfriend... it's all her fault).
http://www.baen.com/library/
You should give them a try. They're awesome!
cbarnett 08-03-2004, 06:04 PM Baen is a top site, that's true. JKR's books aren't legally available (which is a shame, as I reckon they'd do a _lot_ to increase the profile and use of ebooks in general if/when they do become available).
There's a lot of good HP fan fiction (most of it is novel length too). I've posted about some elsewhere in these forums (search on Potter or Purdom). I can also post some urls here if you're interested, Derek.
Craig.
derekweb 08-03-2004, 11:23 PM I'll take a look around and post back or Private if I run into any questions. Thank you, however, for the info! Potter would indeed, I also believe, to increase the eBook reach and acceptance. But I wonder if she even knows about this. /shrug.
Colin Dunstan 08-04-2004, 02:54 AM You are totally right! Why is it that so many major book authors are hesitant to be have their work published as e-books? I am not surprised that many frustrated minds follow "darker" paths to read their favorite books on PDA.

I wish I could find the link but...I read somewhere that Rowling or her publisher or both were asking for $1 Million in advance for the ebook rights to her books. Since ebooks are still catching on and the market isn't that large yet the ebook publishers balked and passed. Definitely a catch-22.
cbarnett 08-04-2004, 06:56 PM I'm not surprised by that situation at all. <sigh> Maybe by the time the next book is ready, she may reconsider (especially as they could then offer all 6 books)
Craig.
