View Full Version : Connect Reader software "sensibility"
gandalfbp 10-20-2006, 03:18 PM Hi,
I have problems with the transferring application (Connect Reader). I transform all my PDF-s to RTF, since the my PDFs are in A4/Legal paper size, and it is absolutely unreadeable on the Reader. So I have several RTF's what are untransferrable. If I select it and drag/drop to the Reader or to the Memory card, the processor of my PC goes up to 100%, and nothing happens.
It is extremly unconvenient, if you want to transfer several files, after a while you realise, that something is wrong, some of the files were transferred, some not.
In one specifica case I oepend my RTF in Word, and removed all the unneccessary formattings: there were some unused styles, what I deleted. Than this file was transferrable.
Clearly the Connect Reader application makes some kind of conversion, however it was written badly, and it falls to an endless loop, if something goes wrong. I am really fed up with the quality of this software.
Does anyone has similar problems? Maybe a (quick) solution for it?
Thanks:
Peter
Bob Russell 10-20-2006, 03:20 PM I haven't seen anything like that on mine, but when I drag books over, I usually go to the library first and the move it to a collection or the Reader or the SD card.
Then I go to the Status item in the tree on the left, which will show you a progress bar and tell you which book is being transferred.
NatCh 10-20-2006, 03:24 PM It's pretty slow on some things for me, but it doesn't hang endlessly ... well, once or twice it's seemed to, and outlasted my own patience with it, but one of the PC's I'm running it on is a bit elderly.
gandalfbp 10-20-2006, 03:29 PM I tried this too, with the same result. It can include the RTF to the library, but if I want to transfer it to the reader, than the Connect Reader application hangs.
The transfer time is clearly matters the size: bigger file size takes more time. But I transferred bigger RTF's already, no problem. This one is a 550 K file only.
And, when I transfer a big file, and I click on the Status, than I can see that it is "moving", the arrows are spinning. But with this file the full applicaiton is blocked, and knocked out. Nothing moves, it is not reacting to anything....
NatCh 10-20-2006, 03:31 PM Hmm. I don't know what's going on there, unless there's something about the particular file that the Reader doesn't like, but that's a wild guess.
Does it open in the PC-side reading software? If so it might rule out the file being the culprit....
gandalfbp 10-20-2006, 03:37 PM Oh, yes, without any problem. I just tried it out.
I am getting crazy now....
NatCh 10-20-2006, 03:54 PM That is ... strange. The only thought I have left is the difference in the processor speed between the PC and the Reader ... but that shouldn't account for it just stopping, only being slower....
Leaping Gnome 10-20-2006, 04:25 PM Maybe email Sony support, they might want a copy of the file to figure out specifically what is causing the hang. Or post it here and see if that happens to one of us, rule out a problem with your install/PC.
gandalfbp 10-20-2006, 05:06 PM Thanks for all of you for the help. At the end I removed most of the styles from the RTF, and now it is fine. I forgot to make a backup of the original state, but if I will find any similar, I will post it here

Hi Gnome, what do you think where should I mail? I had a look on the Sony Support site ( http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/support-contacts.pl?mdl=PRS500 ) , and I am lost. I don't know into where should I turn.
Thanks for advice:

gandalfbp 10-24-2006, 02:39 AM Ok, here we go: I have an RTF stripped down to bare, what is unloadeable to the Reader, since it hangs the COnnect Reader application. Please paste the text to a new file, name it whatever.rtf, and try to load it to the Reader. Originally it was a full book, and I had several other similar faulty ones. I had to export them to plain text, than import to Word, try to shape it like the original.
I am really interested wha tis the result on your config. Or if someone has an idea what is wrong with this RTF?
Thanks:
Peter

Peter, you may try to use the attach function to attach your RTF here.
gandalfbp 10-24-2006, 02:57 AM Sure, I would, but I can not find it anywhere. Please guide me.
Thanks:
Peter
EDIT: sorry, I already found it. It was under the Advanced...
Sorry again to spoil the thread
Peter
gandalfbp 10-24-2006, 03:01 AM So I attach here my unloadeable RTF. If anyone has any idea, why is this file faulty, please let me know. Or if you can guide me where to mail it to Sony Reader support, that would be welcome too.
Peter
Leaping Gnome 10-24-2006, 08:38 AM gandalf, for support look at the bottom right of this page:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-home.pl?mdl=PRS500&LCID=LCTR_Showcase:ITPD:Reader:Home:btnSupport
gandalfbp 10-24-2006, 10:14 AM Sure, I saw it. But how can you specify the Reader? A Business Solution? Clearly not. A Car Audio/Video? No!. Etc. Anfer you select a product category, you have to specify the modell too: you have to choose from a combo. I was unable to find the Reader :(
I have exactly the same problems with some image pdf converted rtf files. They just wouldn't transfer to the reader and the connect software hangs there with the CPU 100% occupied. It drives me crazy... Really hope Sony will soon come up with a software update for this version of Connect Reader. Or someone has a solution for this?
igorsk 10-31-2006, 06:17 AM Opening and saving in WordPad helped in my case.
Opening and saving in WordPad helped in my case.
Thanks. I tried Wordpad and it still won't work. Alternatively, when I import the rtf converted doc into the reader, the doc inside the Sony Reader needs formatting every time I open the file for reading, it takes about a 40 seconds to do so. Some files just simply won't format and force the Sony Reader to reboot.
