View Full Version : iLiad cases from M-edge are available for order
raevyn1 10-19-2006, 06:22 AM Given the apparent fragility (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8002) of our pricey iLiads, it’s good news that the guys at M-edge (http://www.buymedge.com/) have finally made their cases for the iLiad available for order. They’re currently offering two different models: Sleeve Jacket for $34.99 and the Book Jacket for $39.99. A Silicon jacket is slated for sale October 25th.
Check them out. I’ve already put in my order. :)

Cynics 10-21-2006, 10:46 AM Ordered one also..........
vranghel 10-21-2006, 12:20 PM Which one did you guys order? The Sleeve Jacket looks like it doesnt have a cover for the screen. Also for the book jacket is it necessary to remove the iLiad from the jacket to turn it on/off? The lower part seems to be tucked into the jacket.
raevyn1 10-21-2006, 03:42 PM I ordered both actually, because I couldn't choose. ;) I'm not sure if the Book Jacket allows access to the hub connection port or the on/off switch. I've put an email to the M-edge guys for the answer, but given the access on the Sleeve, I should think the Book Jacket would allow power switch access. It'd be a major pain to have to remove the iLiad from the Jacket everytime you need to turn it on/off.
M-edge 10-21-2006, 07:06 PM Thanks to Raevyn1 for plugging us on this great forum! :happy2:
To answer some of your questions;
1) The sleeve jacket DOES have a clear vinyl sheet protecting the screen.
2) The bottom of the sleeve jacket allows access to the earphone port and on/off switch. To get to the charger port, you have to peel back the velcro closing flap. We're working to get some improved pics of the bottom.
3) The bottom of the book jacket allows full access to the earphone and charger ports and on/off switch without removing the iLiad. We put a new pic (http://www.buymedge.com/p_irexpics.html) on the website.
Some general info:
1) We're working on a silicon sleeve style jacket that should be ready around the 25th of October. Colors are TBD.
2) Leather jackets are in the works too, but we don't have an ETA on them just yet
3) We look forward to hearing your comments and welcome your candid feedback so we can make the best jacket possible for the iLiad (and Sony Reader, too!). We don't mind throwing out some discount vouchers either...so keep the comments coming!
Thanks,
Team M-edge

CommanderROR 10-22-2006, 01:48 PM Welcome to the forums M-edge and thanks for offering to work with the community.
One question about the book jacket...does it have a "hard" protection for the screen? Some users have had problems with pressure-damaged screens and it would be nice to have a stiff frontplate on the cover to prevent that from happening.
One other thing...I live in Germany...is there any chance of getting those covers you are offering here?
scotty1024 10-22-2006, 05:14 PM 1) The sleeve jacket DOES have a clear vinyl sheet protecting the screen.
Based on the failure modes seen so far it seems doubtful that a "clear vinyl sheet" is going to offer any protection for the iLiad's screen.
The screen needs to be protected from pressure from fingers while being carried or other objects while stored. A solid sheet of Lexan, fiber board, or for a high end case - aluminum would truly offer protection for the screen.
In addition, for colder climates, the Li-ion battery and e-Ink panel would appreciate a bit of insulation to keep them warm longer during transit. An extra $$$ option for a simple LCD temperature strip (the same material used in mood rings) on the inside of the case so one could check how cold its getting would be thoughtful.

scotty1024 10-22-2006, 10:12 PM It would be thicker, more expensive and more fragile.
But you could use one if you want. :)
raevyn1 10-23-2006, 03:20 AM Scotty, the tech specs state: Operating temperature is 0°C to 50°C. Storage temperature is –20°C to 70°C. What have you found is the real range and what do you suggest for cold weather protection?
I know this is slightly OT, but my iLiad stays at home until I can protect it better which I hope the M-edge cases will do. It's gotta beat the case iRex gave us ;)
CommanderROR 10-23-2006, 06:01 AM I guess it will beat the case iRex gave us..and the official iRex cover was pushed back to december by the way...^^
adbosch 10-23-2006, 06:47 AM Shaped like a book! Perhaps plastic with leather(like) coating. Good solid screen protection when closed. With title "Iliad" of course.
If possible include a "stand" (picture frame like) in the back, so the iLiad may be put on a desk or table standing up.
NatCh 10-23-2006, 02:17 PM It would be thicker, more expensive and more fragile.
But you could use one if you want. :)Um ... I meant the flat plastic strip kind -- like this one:http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444181 1428&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302031321&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023693&bmUID=1161566811818&itemNo=1&Ntt=thermometer&In=Fish&previousText=thermometer&N=2023693
It's around $2, flexible, and uses that colored liquid crystal stuff you were talking about, my concern is that I don't think it has enough range to tell whether it's too cold, as they only go down to 65° F :(
M-edge 10-23-2006, 08:12 PM We ship internationally... :xmas:
The Sleeve Jacket isn't going to provide great protection against high impact hits to the screen; however, it will protect against abrasions.
The Book Jacket is your best bet to protect against harder hits to the screen.
Note, we're adding a business card pocket to the left side of the Book Jacket and a holder for the stylus or a pen. Any other suggestions?
Help yourself to some free shipping through tomorrow, 10/24 at 1100EDT. Use code "ship_free".

How about spare/extra CF and SD card pockets? USB key holder (slim, thumb-drive type)?
emkay 10-24-2006, 07:37 AM The Book Jacket is your best bet to protect against harder hits to the screen.
Hi there - does the Book Jacket cover have a stiff board inside it, or is it just made of neoprene?
Thanks.
M-edge 10-24-2006, 05:07 PM The book jacket is hardboard covered in neoprene; so it provides very good impact protection to the screen.
CommanderROR 10-24-2006, 06:10 PM Cool...then I guess I'll order one in the next few days...
Thanks.
emkay 10-25-2006, 07:32 AM Good, I'm in.
CommanderROR 10-30-2006, 06:05 AM I just ordered my Medge Book-style Iliad protector...let's see how long it takes for the things to be in stock and to ship to Germany.
btw....does anyone have any new details about those silicon cases? The website still says 25th of October which is over if I'm not completely mistaken...^^
they also adapted the iRex calendar. :)
CommanderROR 10-30-2006, 04:19 PM could be...
I hope they won't take forever to send me my case...then I can finally start taking my Iliad along when I go somewhere without wrapping it in towels and then still worrying...
M-edge 10-31-2006, 06:47 AM Expected ship date for all jackets is 6 Nov 2006. Shipping abroad will take 4 to 6 days. Shipping within the US will take 2 to 3 days.
We had to slip the ship date of our silicon jacket as we work out some fit and finish issues. Standby for a new date. Website will be updated shortly.
CommanderROR 11-09-2006, 07:42 AM My Iliad Jacket startet it's trip today according to the mail I received...let's see how long it takes to get here.
mvoosten 04-16-2008, 02:49 AM Some comments on the M-edge cover for the Iliad after using it:
- The flipbar can only be used properly one way! Flipping back pages (from left to right, is hard or makes it stuck)
- Stylus is VERY hard to access.. since I heavily use the stylus this is not really functional. Leaving it out of the iliad is not an option in the loop, as the loop is not snug tight and leaving it out drains power.
- Connect button is partly covered,
All in all, not too pleased with the cover so far :(
saniko 04-30-2008, 12:27 PM It definately gets better with time. I'm surprised I'm rooting for it, but I really like it now after two weeks of constant use.
tselling 05-09-2008, 07:51 PM I wound up modifying the medge book jacket. I cut out the support along the left edge and top. Then I put velcro in the upper left corner. I left the bottom and right side supports alone. This modification allows for easy flipping of pages in either direction, easy access to all the buttons, and still keeps the iLiad secure. I looked at the official iRex cover that velcro's on but it would have been around $25 more than the medge with shipping.
Vanessa 05-10-2008, 03:22 PM Pictures ?
My mother is making me a leather cover for the iLiad, but in case it turns out really too ugly, I'd like to try a M-edge case (same for me, iRex would be great, but shipping is ultra expensive).
